I'm also 34 not 54...!

Piling a few miles on and liking it more and more. Can be used as a "normal" car quite happily then slip it into semi auto and let rip. It even sounds pretty good.

Corrado - better get used to it first but maybe...
the reason for the difference in power/torque stats your talking about, is that the lower stats are for the older 535d, the newer ones have the same as your 335d, the facelift 535d got the newer engine, same as your 335d engine

also the weight between a 535d vs 335d is very little in it,

535d = 1735
335d = 1655

so only a difference of 80 kg, on the road, there aint going to be much in it

and also I really dont like the look of the new style 3 series, sorry.

iam just off bm's at present, lol

Interesting reading Dave.

I think the 5 series look best in saloon form with the right alloys and M Sport bodykit. And in black. Then it has serious presence. The SE estate just looks a bit odd (that's what the inlaws had - and in very bizarre Barbara red!!) and frumpy.

Anyway both are good cars, both divide opinions (the boggo E90 3 series saloon looks like a Mitsi Carisma for example!!) but both are a lot of fun!

Dave - what do you like BTW? Just out of interest?

Oddly enough I had a 535d m sport in black, with the bmw 19 inch alloys, it looked great but after spending £3000+ on a broken turbo, some sensor under the intake manifold and a downpipe, takes the shine of it!!
Ive got a sub forrester turbo(ppp), at present, which isnt a looker!

what cars do I like??

Flippin eck - the downside of having a quick car again - scaring myself silly! Nothing dangerous but pushed it hard enough to get the adrenaline pumping big style. And really narked a Passat driver by...

...overtaking him (safely)!

There are a number of cars everyone must drive once - a 911, a Ferrari (modernish if possible), an Elise, a Scooby, an Evo and now I must add a 335d...! It's like nothing else.

I've read some reviews which quote the 30-70 time at 3.4s, that's 0.3s quicker then the 5.0 litre V10 M5 and 2 full seconds quicker than an STi PPP Awesome overtaking potential My mate move from a Litchfield Type 20 to his 335D and wouldn't go back now, especially after his Bluefin

the 3.4 secs thing, is a well known misprint, it was meant to be 5.4 secs

i imagine too youve got to be quite skilled to get the best out with such a narrow band of power ?

This narrow power band thing always makes me laugh. I have a Skoda diesel with the VAG 1.9 TDi lump map'd to 180/312 and regardless of what the revs are, I still use 3 gears to hit 60, just like my Scoob, and still have 6 gears to get me over 130, just like my Scoob. I used to use 3k to 6.5k in the Scoob, in the Fabia I use 2k to 4.5k, yet still accelerate from 30-70 in about 6 seconds, not much behind an STi, with PPP'd STi's only rated at about 5.4s (source : Prodrive). My mate with the 335D might argue that the 3.4s isn't a typo, and if it is, it isn't the 3 that's wrong, maybe the '.4' If my 1.9 pushing 312 torques can do 6s, a 3 litre with two (sequential) blowers would not be just .6s faster. I'll ask if we can bolt the Driftbox into the 335 and do our own test !

Didnt realise scoobys come with 6 gears now ..

But its the same arguement they BOTH produce the power in a relatively narrow band.

I sort of imagined a turbo diesel ,mondeo in my case, would be able to hack sub 30 in fourth happily - it doesnt , maybe its the gearing

I trundle about at 30 in 6th regularly. No way would it pull from that, but if the road is clear and I don't anticipate any need for a burst of speed it'll happily roll along. A quick change to 3rd covers any change of speed up or down.

STi's have had 6sp 'boxes since the Bugeye.

dpb - the two turbos mean the power band is much broader - in fact there is no real flat spot in the power delivery from nothing to redline.

It took me a while to get used to the Astra's narrow power band (2500-4250 rpm!!) but once you do get it sussed, it's quick. The 335d just keeps on pulling like a train.

Some are getting crazy 1/4 mile times for them and some have got amazing 0-60 (I've seen 5.6s) and 0-100 (13.3 for coupe, 13.7 for Touring) times, and it's been called a junior supercar by several journos. Bold claims and I'm not going to back them but it really is a very quick, hard braking and tidy handling machine.

There are always silly figures thrown about but it seems most agree that an E46 M3 can't get away from a 335d and two long terms have even gone on about RS4s having to try very hard to lose one. Now an RS4 is clearly much quicker but doesn't have much torque.

I used to think high torque was irrelevant but now I could not live without it.

I had a 535d that was remapped, there's no doubt that it could well be in the 4's for the 30-70mph, it was very quick for that sort of thing, but the topend still lacked that punch you would get from a petrol engined car, I would find I could go faster by leaving it in a higher gear, if you were near topend of the rev range it, just didnt feel as fast, I found the sweet spot was around 2500 to 4000rpm.

Dave - agreed. I reckon the fun stops at just over 4k rpm. Just needs to be adapted to! Big like a grunty old V8 in some respects.

I can use loads of my torques in 6th at 30 mph. It just pulls all the way through to where the road runs out

I've not yet had the ***** to hit the red line in 3rd 'cos I appear to be doing around about 90 - 100 mph and still only at 5500 rpm.

I have to agree Mattee - torque really is an amazing feeling when you've got loads on tap.
(bearing in mind I have about 460 of them )

Whoa there big boy!

I wasn't having a pop.
I was merely giving my view on my car and my experience.

FFS, lighten up.

(And mine's also petrol. And it's got 2 turbos )

Zip - so what is it - racked my brain for a twin turbo car with that kind of torque but failed. Unless it's a very modded 300ZX or something (I think they were TT?)?

Certainly sounds interesting!

It's called TORQUE sunshine, you watch far too much top gear.

Ah yes, but, what's the plural of torque?
Is it like sheep? i.e. I have one torque, I have 2 torques.
I have one sheep, I have 2 sheeps.

You have x lbs/ft or nm of Torque.

It's a bit like saying I have some petrol, you don't have petrols do you?

I know.
I'm trying to inject a bit of humour.

Perhaps when I originally typed in 'torques' I should have put (sic) after it.

All's well.....
