Agreed, fantastic programme. I will be watching it again on Iplayer later as the other half was talking and making a racket with her mum most of the way through that and top gear.
Unbelievable how high those U2's go, I would love to go up in one
Can you get the extra show from BBC4 on iplayer as well?.

Just found this on wikipedia
In 1984, during a major NATO exercise, Royal Air Force Flight Lieutenant Mike Hale intercepted a U-2 at a height of 66,000 feet (20,000 m), where the aircraft had previously been considered safe from interception. Hale climbed to 88,000 feet (27,000 m) in his Lightning F3.

OK, how 'lucky' is May? As in can any civilian 'pay' for the U2 privilege? If so, must be pretty pricey!

Enjoyed the first prog but thought the second was much better, would liked to have seen even more of the training and his meeting the apollo crews.
I'd rather see three or four episodes of this than about Mary turning round the fortunes of charity shops. Maybe there'll be a DVD for Christmas with "unseen" footage...

It's not like the trainers will be equipped with anything classified, all they are is a long obsolete supersonic fighter with a pair of big daft wings and some extremely dodgy handling characteristics
It's all the reconnaisance gear that's a secret

What is very sad is the fact that until a few years ago, yer ordinary man in the street, wearing just jeans and a t-shirt (and a few hundred notes in his back pocket) could pop along to Heathrow and get on a British (with a little help from the, er, French) plane at fly at 60,000 feet and a couple of Machs whilst looking down at the curvature of the Earth and up at the blackness of space. Oh, and scoff fancy food and champagne at the same time
No need for a few days "training", or having to wear pressurised space suit.
How do we put the "Great" back into Britain??

We've just watched the James May On The Moon prog and it was ACE!
At the ripe old age of 44 I am now thinking of a career change to become an astronaught & Mrs Big Pete thinks James May is even lovely-er than before
