put some pics up of the rest of the car so we can see what the rest of it is like, secondhand engines are ok but i wouldnt bother because you dont know what condition there in and could go wrong at anytime unless you get hold of one with and paperwork to say its been rebuilt,i doubt the seller is going to what to stump up lots of money for a rebuild,

looks pretty tidy from the pics, its really up to you mate, how much you like and want to keep the car,i would defo make sure you get him to pay for most the repairs mind, car looks like its had some monet spent on it,if you do keep it and get the engine done i would buy a mapable ecu for it and get it mapped for piece of mind,

Call trading standards 08454 04 05 06

Tell them what has happened and they will give you details on how to construct a letter to send to the owner of the garage. You send it recorded delivery and go from there.

Options are, Repair, Replacement or Refund.

You have to accept whatever the trader offers you and be reasonable because if you end up taking the chap to court your conduct is the bit that will sway it.

Trust me, this method does work. My 2004 waggon decided to chew up its engine within 2000 miles of ownership. Garage took it back and rebuilt the engine at their cost £3,500 in total after a carefully worded letter.

Hi there, my bottom end went on my bug eye 7 weeks ago, only had the car 11 weeks and its only done 34000 miles with fssh, but was a private buy so i did'nt have a leg to stand on, its realy gut renching when it happens!! so know how you feel. luckily my brother is a dab hand with engines and we did a full bottom end rebuild, sti crank, acl bearings, high pressure oil pump and modene, timing belt kit, steel head gaskets etc at a cost of £1,300 for the parts, best to get everything done as the shards of metal get everwhere. you have a very smart car there so hope you get it sorted so you can enjoy it, i've only got 250 miles to go then mines run in, so i can get my boost back on and take it over 3000 revs, good luck, it'll be worth the wait.

As long as it all gets replaced and not just cleaned out ie oil pump, modene, and a new crank as we were told never to get it ground, it will be okay, it broke my heart having to pull the money out, But at least you should get a guarantee for the work.
