Rusti, Have you worked out how your going to remove the seized bolt. If you drill it for an easy out then grind the bolt head off I think it will come out easily. It is only because the bolt is in tension that it is so tight. What was the condition of the bolts you managed to get out. I would guess that they were in pretty good condition apart from the bolt heads. Hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs. Lol
With the weather I have not had chance to even size up the job if i'm honest, but your suggestion seems like a good option, I have some 'higher' grip 6 points I might try first to see if I get purchase.
That's a reasonable shout, but there is some rust I want to take care of which is one of the main reasons for considering it.
itd be worth taking the car to someone to ask how much to repair rust/paint etc rather than going down the full respray route. The hatch STI, all uk variants, will never be desirable imo and if you are using it daily you'll find itll get marks/stone chips again soon as youve had it painted and you'll get even more annoyed by them than before!

maybe not desirable to the purists, but they're harder to come by than a lot of other models and none of these cars seem to be holding value besides a few. So it's only really for me and the car isn't a daily drive.
The underside looks really clean for a UK car (I've come from Evos so anything without holes is a bonus), but the splats/rear doors have been peppered and it's starting to bubble through. Roof has some very minor bubbling too. It's where chips haven't been touched in over the years.
I didn't notice it when I bought it, so it's very minor but I know it's there lol.
i'm surprised as these are a rust car like the classics go on the wings, rear arches etc.
arches are fine, couple chips that are rusting but nothing at all major. Really want to get the whole thing painted, though. Main reason is a big ding in the door and rear quarter. I plan to keep the car so it’s just whether it’s worth the outlay to me.
The place that I've seen rust on a few hatches is the roof seams where they meet the hatch, under the roof bar trim.
Good call, thanks. After reading this, I checked mine. There was slight rusting where you said. Cleaned the whole area under the trim and treated with Waxoyl.
Removing/replacing the trim is fiddly. Used an old credit card rather than screwdriver. They're useful things. Free and kinder to paintwork.
78mile shakedown yesterday after its latest tantrum...so far it seems to behaving itself still none the wiser as to what caused oil to mix into coolant and not vice versa. Changed its modine and cleaned everything now just monitoring

John, does the trim just pop off, and is it better starting one end or the other? I'm having a strip down. Cheers.

To remove the trim, slide the card under it then along the trim. There are a number of slotted clips in each trim. These slide inside the trim onto mushroom headed studs on the car. The clips slide forward on the RHS and back on LHS. Start at the back of the car. Slide the clips out of the studs and the trim will lift slightly. Then you can see how it works. The trims are hooked under the windscreen seal at the front. It's fiddly but not difficult. Don't use too much force.
once apart, you can see how to replace them.
Looking to change the panel filter in my WRX-S. It came with a rather old and tired looking K&N, I have given it a clean, but I think it has seen better days.
What filters are you using? any particular recommendations?
Thanks John 37.
Panel filter wise I've used K&N for years, but tried a Cosworth last year, and found alot of dust beyond it. I now have a dry AEM filter, which seems fine, with the old k&n for back up
I've posted this in the suspension section, but maybe a hatch owner will be able to help me. My Whiteline nearside top mount is failing at under 18000 miles, and I need alternative suggestions . I'm quite happy to go back to oem, or consider anything else
