Default Manifold spacers

I'd use Carl Davey anytime, great guy and so helpful .. no I don't know him outside of buying these bits off him! And billet fuel rails,injector o-ring sets, etc.

I used a set of the original Tufnol Carp insulating 10mm spacers on my classic when I fitted the 20G turbo. Fitted spot on and worked.. manifold was cool / cold to the touch after.

He does pure spacers - 20mm ally, or insulating 8mm PTFE with build in 0-rings, or the 10mm original ones.

Not tried them on the Hatch but at build time or when I pull the manifold to fit the inlet pipe I think I may try a set.

LASTLY the slight hesitation on very light throttle application, I feel it sometimes too. Not every day but it lurks there somewhere.

It wasn't there on the filter + airbox, but after fitting the Litchfield / Forge CAIK it appeared. Maybe a trait on CAIK ? In fact off boost it felt so much better on the original filter / airbox.

I did take my car back to have the map tweaked to remove it, but it is very hard to replicate in a test setting. So we fiddled and adjusted and it 'seemed good', but once home for a week I found it again. I'm sure I could take it for another tweak for free but for the time and money I thought I'd wait until another visit.

I've noted what Rob said about how he got rid of this issue - next time I'll know how to literate myself. lol.

I did find it in the UK at vastly inflated prices... best order direct. Some other main stockists may have the spacers sitting on their shelves...

Anyone with a hatch that's installed manifold spacers?

Was there any issues with TMIC -> manifold pipe or problems with the increased height and the bonnet / TMIC ducting?

Not that I know of, he did have issues with the 10mm spacers on some of the late classics, ones with coil on top of the manifold which made the plug leads tight for length.

I'll be going for the 8mm with O rings when it comes time to swap injectors.

Anyone want a set of spacers am about to order a set saves shipping charges thought i might get a few sets for other members on here and you can pay me when they arrive however if there are any customs charges they will have to be split.

Works out way cheaper than buying the aluminum ones from carl davey @£220 they only cost $85 from grim speed. I have also been told that the one from grim speed made out of Phenolic plastic are better

Apsotle you want some?

The 8mm PTFE ones from Carl are £110 Inc del and are as good as the old 10mm ones for heat but the grimspeed one are only 8mm but made from the same material that Carl used in his original 10mm spacers.
The aluminium ones are for fitting different manifolds or lifting the manifold for front entry aren't they?

Yeh I'll try Car Davey tomorrow morning as i want all this stuff here before I fit the turbo.

I am also going for the Titanium blanket for the turbo $200 from DEI and might order a few rolls of the Ali tape to ,but this will have to come direct from the states or does anyone know a UK stockist?

So I wanted to know why they are better than the Carl Davey ones ...

I had read on another site that some plastic ones can warp - but no brands were mentioned.


Also Cosworth do some too called 'Thermal Guard Composite Intake Gasket' at around $75

Also worth considering if doing an USA order is the Perrin intake silicon - well worth getting at a sensible price (here £225 - there USA £125 +).

I've been lurking, waiting for a definitive answer

Its one of the many things I haven't yet done

If you use a CAI, I recommend the mods I did on the side vents and the slot in the fog cover. AI temps now 1-2C above ambient (as long as you are moving !!).

I'll be interested when a decision is made

I contacted Carl Davey today by e-mail ,however on his website it says it can take up to two weeks to reply
Anyone got a direct number for him or now any traders stocking the spacers?

I've orderd The titanium turbo cover £240 should be here tomorrow can't be botherd waiting for all the bits to come from the states I want all the parts fitting this weekend.

Which is better? That's a tough call!

What I can say is that PTFE typically has a lower rate of thermal conductivity than Tufnol carp phenolic - 0.25 W/(m.K) vs 0.37 W/(m.K) respectively. Given the above and assuming same material thickness, PTFE would be the better option for our intended application - at least from an insulating standpoint. How the 2 materials compare for compression, deformation, prolonged exposure to heat etc etc I couldn't say.

Gasketing is another area for consideration. Personally I like the Carl Davey design using Viton 'O' rings as gaskets. In the unlikely event of deformation, the 'O' ring will simply expand (within reason) to fill the void, something a conventional gasket can't do. Also by using 'O' rings you don't have the thickness of the gaskets to factor in, however marginal that may be.

I'm sure both products are excellent. Grimmspeed products as a rule are top notch, they've sold oodles of these kits and I've not read anything negative about them. Carl Davey products are highly respected and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have released the PTFE version to the market without doing his homework first.

And I would imagine the cost would be fairly similar by the time you factor in gaskets, shipping, VAT and duty for the GS kit.

Anyway, these are my personal thoughts, take them as you will and I refuse to be held accountable!

LED running lights have been done, someone cut a small rectangular hole above the fogs, looked ok but not quite OE.

IIRC they were an option for JDM. Japanparts sell the official kit.

Personally DRLs are a big no no. Cool when they first appeared on Audis but now that Halfrauds sell the kits by the boat load to every wee boy/girl racer in the country they should be confined to Room 101 - in my opinion of course!

cheers for the link.. it says does not fit STi.

Was jusdt thinking that seeing as I leave my side lights on when I turn the car off (so side lights are on all the time... like DTRL's) maybe daytime running lights are availible that would be a better option.

For info:
If you are running a cosworth oil pump (or similar high pressure pump), it may be worth checking the clips holding the return oil feed from the turbo in place are working. Mine were held on using the Subaru wire clips and the lower one was so lose you could easily push it round with your finger, and allowed oil to leak onto the lagged up-pipes and produced oil smoke that filled the road behind to the point of almost zero visibility ! This was when I was giving it a short test blast (!) today, thinking I had cured the smoke problem (discovered Tues) by putting jubilee clips on the 2 breather hoses coming out of the drivers side cam cover, which had a pool of oil around them which was dripping down the cam cover onto the lagging, causing clouds of oily smoke behind. Now seems there were 2 oil leak probs.
To put a jubilee clip on the return pipe looks like a steering rack out job
which by co-incidence was on the job list.
