Got an iphone .. what now ?

mine isnt - it goes ring ring!
ahhh, you have a good quality speaker on your phone. I suppose that makes the 5 secs of the song you hear while transfering from pocket to ear worthwhile!

The games emulators sound interesting as does the sat nav mms and video recording. I might have a look into jailbreaking, now that I know it can be reversed

I'm sorry but that's utter bollocks. I love my iPhone but suggesting the battery life is anything other than garbage is just über-fanboyism. For example, my phone usually comes off charge at 8am and if I don't charge it again it'll be dead by 9:30pm every time. Today I charged it for 40 mins off my laptop till 5pm and it's dropped to 40% already. By contrast, my previous phone lasted over a week on one charge. Admittedly, I didn't do practically all my web surfing on my previous phone.

One thing to be VERY wary about when doing this is what your network says about tethering with your plan. I think you'd probably find that the T&C's forbid tethering, or that you'll be charged a higher rate if you do use it. When OS3 is out it's said to include, in software, the ability to use the iPhone tethered, however, it'll be up to the network to decide if you can use it and also how much more it'll cost you to use it tethered. You can bet that they won't make it free.
This is not strictly true. Jailbreaking an iPhone will NOT allow you to use it on another network. Jailbreaking is the act of breaking out of a chroot jail, basically speaking, it allows you to run arbitrary code or applications. Most of the apps on the iPhone are digitally signed and if an app does not have a key, it won't run. Plus to get apps onto the iPhone you'd need to use the AppStore. Jailbreaking allows you to get apps onto the iPhone without using the AppStore. Typically you'd install Cydia which you can think of as similar to the AppStore, it allows you to add apps to the iPhone.
Unlocking an iPhone is the act of removing the network lock. UK iPhones are locked to O2, if you try to use it on, for example, Orange, it won't work. If you use an app to Unlock the iPhone then you'll be able to use it on any network you want.
Part of the confusion comes from the fact that the same apps you use to Jailbreak the iPhone can also be used to unlock it, for example, QuickPWN will allow you to Jailbreak and Unlock your phone. I *think* you do need to jailbreak it before you can unlock it as well, though I could be wrong.

Essentially thats what I meant though. When you jailbreak it you can use the Yellowsnow app that lets you use it on any network. Not much of a drama, but thats what jailbreaking lets you do.
Tethering, there is no way for 02 to really know its being used as the iphone is used as a gateway so all normal traffic goes to the iphone through the network , and its only locally that the info is passed back to the pc through the application. A little like internet connection sharing.

I agree the battery is far from great, but the last time I upgraded my firmware to 2.1 the battery was greatly improved.
Also when I was in germany and turned off the 3g and wireless etc, the battery lasted me a full week using the phone lightly as an ipod and a few texts.
Normally my battery lasts 2 days with using it quite a lot on wireless and reading emails all day and playing some games.

My battery life if poor - I charge daily. I have brightness turned down, no bluetooth or 3G or location services. I do have Wireless on constant though.
I had to change my iPhone (old firmware upgraded killed wi-fi, bluetooth) and I'm sure this one doesn;t have as good battery life.
However, I don't think it's as bad as people make it out. I use my phone a LOT throughout the day. Calendar, e-mail (lots), calls, safari, WoL prog, a couple of games and facebook!

I had a skin and icons off the blackberry storm though I knocked it as it clashed.
Cheers Swiss I got that cammera app. Yeah I'm quite pleased that I have a video recorder now, could never understand why it wasn't included

Battery life is my biggest gripe, an hours commute each way to work with the iPod on and general tinkering on the app store for maybe 20 mins a day and the battery will last on average 2 days between charges.
Apple recommend completly draining the battery until dead at least once a month prior to a full 5 hour charge to get the best from it - not that that's been a regular occurance whilst I've owned mine...

The vending machine was quite good
Ive started using the catagories app today so you make icons for things like games and utilties and dump all your apps in there. (if you like a tidy iphone)

Have you setup all the repositories so you get all the app listings?
You should see it on the the Home page when you go into Cydia where it says Welcome to Cydia then half way down the page it says featured packages. Its in the same bit where you get all the cool stuff like the Video camera app
Do you see those other apps or do you have to search ?
If you need to search its called categories
