This is as far as I've got today.
The sack of sound deadening alone was 10.2kg. Which I was quote surprised about.

It's amazing how it all adds up isn't it. I saw over on 22b that your going to cage it mate. Sounds good! What are you planning to use the car for?
Obviously your going a bit more track focused, do you have a particular discipln in mind or is it track days?

Hi Joe,

Not intending to compete with it at all to be honest. It's something ive wanted to do forever and ive reached a point where I think it's too fast not to have one. Any kind of "off" you may have in it isn't going to be little.
It's always been too heavy too. Something I really want to do it lighten it.
I was going to rear cage it. Then I thought about a bolt in. But if you're a gonna do it, you might aswell just do it properly and stiffen the whole damn lot and weld in a proper cage.
It's staying as a road car, but think of it as my answer to a Subaru GT3 RS

Following this with great interest Frayz. My own car gets used so little these days, I'm very tempted to strip it out and lighten it...just 'cause I can, really

It's the same boat I'm in Tim.
It's something that's bugged me for ages that's it's well overweight. I Just cracked and thought, why am I lugging all this crap around with me when I don't use the ABS, radio, AC. It's not had airbags for 5 years yet I still had the module and loom.

It's free performance and not just in a straight line, steering, braking direction changes. Everything is better with less weight. So I'm gonna see how far I can go sensibly.
As said, a GT3RS version if you will.

Yep - I "sensed" this Frayz. Also, I'm quite enjoying taking the car on the drag strip, hence me original post on 22B...

...plugging my car's weight and power suggest my 1/4 mile time should be around 11.5 (I was doing 11.7 at TOTB a couple of years ago). Lose 200kg and I might break in to the 10's. Got to be worth a try

I think it can be done without ruining the car. It's my car and in reality it's not going to be sold. So I may as well build it into something that I get the most enjoyment from.

We think very similarly

No garage at present, but hope to take on a new business premises next year, complete with a 2 or 4 post lift, then the fun will start

One things for sure. Chipping out sound deadening is a bloody crap job. It's something you just need to keep going at. The cold weather certainly helped me. Simply amazed at how much it all weighed together. When you start doing it you thing, well this don't weigh much. What the point? Then once you're finished it's quite substantial.
The heavy duty bulkhead sound deadening mats are really bulky. I had to strip the heater box out to get to those.
It's amazing how much nicer the car is inside with less clutter though, and I've only just begun.

Wow that's a lot of weight in that sound deadening, still one of the best Bugs I've seen, it looked so good when I popped up to collect the flocked dash

Glad to see you're still modifying it Frayz, I thought at one point it was going to go to a new owner.
A cage and stripping out is something I've considered but I did read a while back its advised to wear a crash helmet on the road if a cage is fitted?

I'm strapped into a fixed back carbon bucket seat that's say much lower thn that of the bars. If I have an accident that's hard enough to bend a cage that close to my head then I think I'll have more to worry about. Lol.
Hopefully it's there for ridigidity and not to be used in an accident.

Not sure if I wanna cut the well out yet. Where will I put the spare? Also quite like the idea of keeping the car whole.

Lol, I know what you mean. The thought of having to wear a crash helmet driving on the road put me off but as you say there's ways round it.
As for the wheel well, could there be a market there for a carbon well moulded from the original?

You'll have to post up a video of what it sounds like inside with all the deadening gone.

Lol, could be. But I do to think there are THAT many people willing to chop their car for it. And the ones that do dont care about a wheel well. They just want it as light as possible, so generally opt for a flat sheet.
I'm tempted to go with an aluminium honeycomb sheet or carbon, although carbon is so much more expensive vs the gains and to get something as strong and light in the carbon vs the honeycomb structure would be a fortune.

Ultimately I could also look at replacing the doors for GRP items too. Maybe gut the fronts and retain the steel so I can keep the electric front windows, (or manual windows) GRP rear doors and polycarbonate

Harness won't stop you head butting the cage...go do some research on what the human neck does under extream g's, sudden deceleration for example.

Full cage = lid...just think carefully about passengers and usability, just saying.

If my neck reaches a cage with my seat mounted as low as it is Ian. I'll be dead before my head hits the cage.
Appreciate the comment though mate.

I know we are both vertically challenged but you will be surprised by the hyper extension, it really is worth checking out...if I didn't care I wouldn't both posting
