Thanks guys, still a bit mixed up with the models so far as there seems millions of them. The original choice was the 2008 hatch wrx sti 300. But a mate at work may be selling his 04 sti although 2 different options i didn't think of it until i saw all these issues with the new model. I would much still prefer the hatch if i know the issues seemed to be cured. I like the custom map idea but really need the waranty as i will need it for work around 15000 miles a year.

Big thanks to the guys at Ian Grieves in Falkirk, they got the car towed up there gave us a hire car and got the engine out and pistion replaced, remaped and back on the road in a week. They even washed it - sign of a good garage imho. So taking it easy for few thousand miles. It was great driving it again its just a fantastic car, thinking about PPP now. Still slightly pis*ed at Subaru for it getting to this stage in the first place.

Yes another 08 engine piston damage on No 4.
After a refresh the engine started to miss a beat around 2 - 3000 rev, to cut a long story down Subaru have refused a warrenty claim as I have been on the track, this was at Jap Fest in the rain for the first time.
I have been told that the car should not be driven to max as this is harsh driving
and the car would not be covered. the problem is the same as all the rest of the cars that havent been on the track so I cannot understand there attitude. Can any body help and advise me what to do. I have faxed a letter to the top man last Wend but still no reply.

I was reliably informed yesterday that a certain party has got through THREE 2.5ltr engines on the hatchback, whilst using the car for track use. This is not competition stuff, just corporate "experience" days.

four ways to handle it

Call a lawyer and let them deal with it.

Call the local paper, national papers, car magazines, watchdog and any other place likely to cause Subaru some discomfort and tell them all about it.

Get your self a placard and parade around your local dealers forecourt telling everybody what you think of subaru

Print off all the engine issues on this forum, IWSTI, SIDC and NAIOC and send them to International Motors along with a letter expressing your disappointment in there product and warn them you will be forced to take all the action above if they dont sort it out.

One track day invalidating a warranty is a load of shi*e. Cost engineering at its best.

MONDEORSi,

I haven't looked through my MY07 service & warranty details, so not sure if this "I have been told that the car should not be driven to max as this is harsh driving and the car would not be covered" , would exclude a warranty claim! As whether it's been on track or not, doesn't prove it's been driven harsh. Thus, IM will be unable to prove this.

I guess that as long as it’s serviced and maintained in-line with & in accordance with manufacturers guidelines, they have to cover it!

Take it to a solicitor, with as mentioned a copy of all the failure threads from the varous forums & then claim your solicitor cost from them when they, IM complete the re-build!

i think it is in their terms and conditions that if it's used on a track or for competitive racing then the warranty is null and void.

Just a quick question from a newbie, but are these 2.5ltr hatchback engines the same spec as the uk hawkeye 2.5ltr cars ?

Cheers

It does say this on page 3 of your service/warranty book, i think there word "overloading" covers a host of things.
But they do sell there cars as performance cars & sell them as such, & with there failure track record at the moment, particurely in the USA, i think if they are going to fail they will, its just a matter of when, & if they are used more sportingly than others, this will just highlight the problem sooner.
Luckily my Hatch S-GT is still OK, but it is a 2 litre not 2.5.

No. They share some components but the map specifically is totally different.

Yes the ecu reflash does cure the problem of the way the fuel cuts out when the engine red lines causing the no.4 piston ringland failure.

I had mine done last week and they completly remove the existing map and replace with the new one, it takes about 30mins.

By the way, how many of these engine failures also where run on 95 ron petrol?

I have been told by my local Subaru garage and tuners they have to be run on at least 98ron (it says this inside the fuel flap)

jho!

subaru state its how the car is driven, i.e hitting the rev limiter miss use of gears etc that cause them to blow, Mine was remaped by andy forrest now has 20k on the clock and is still going strong

Subaru can supposedly get that information off the ecu anyway.

it doesnt need to video anything but it does control and adjust the fuelling, most modern cars will show if they have been pushed to the redline on the logs, getting far too smart these ecu's

on the diesel you can see how many times it has been over revved, at what mileage it was over revved and for how long, on the petrols you can see the freeze frame data when a cel comes on which gives you all the info at that point in time. i haven't found yet if you can get the data like the diesel.
