Well - collected it today from Iain with the repaired downpipe. It's running very rich, but nevertheless it's "chalk and cheese" compared to before. Actually, I think Len (Subaru4You) and Iain stitched me up and pulled a fast one, I don't think they really fitted the LM480 at all - there's simply no comparison
It pulls like a train, with a wallop in the back in any gear as it comes on boost - but very smooth and progressive with it, right the way to the redline.
In 6th gear, boost reached 1 bar at 3000rpm, and 1.8bar at 3300rpm; Iain hopes the map tweak will lower that further still.
The car is bordering on being a bit scary now - I've never had torque steer in a Scoob before but it's got it now - and insane speeds are reached immensely quickly. Grin factor - ten out of ten
It's booked in for a map tweak - and, hopefully, the "megarom" per-gear mapping - on Thursday with Simon/JGM up at Len's so, with a following wind, RR figures will follow at the end of the week.
I had one instance of clouds of oily-smoke out of the back (one of the issues that caused us to draw breath and get the car to Iain's in the first place, as the turbo was possibly to blame). This was after the first blast after crawling through the slow Newbury traffic - I stopped off at S4U after picking the car up from Iain and it had been fine up until then.
I'm 90% sure it's related to the catch can breather which I think is a bit pinched by the bonnet. I have a new custom 3-inlet unit arriving in a few days so will sort it properly then, and run the vent pipe somewhere out of the way.
For now, I'm just pleased to have it back

Tim,
If you are getting what feels like torque steer, you need to get the handling set-up looked at. You will probably find the front is lifting too much and causing the steering to go light. I had the same problem and sorted it with set-up changes in the handling department. I have more torque than you and I don't get that problem now, so it can be sorted.
Hat's off to Litchfield Imports for sorting your issues out.

Tim,
Have a chat with Iain...... he knows all about this area intimately and has vast knowledge/experience on how an Impreza should handle on the road. I would suggest you book Iain for a couple of hours to set your suspension up to teach you "feel" and how this can be altered with the suspension. He will be able to do this WITH YOU on the road. I did this with Iain and my Spec C when I needed to understand how rebound and compression works with what I was experiencing on the road. It was invaluable in understanding things for my own good and after minor personal tweaks of my own (after Iain and myself agreed a very good base set-up), it was the suspension set-up that did the business at the last two rounds of ScoobySprint last year. It's all about "feel" and not about "how many clicks". Big differences can be made overall with tyre pressures and geometry, so it would be worth ensuring everything is balanced. Again, Iain has all the equipment/knowledge/experience for this as well.
Within a very short period of time between Round 3 and Round 4, my car went from "dog" to "god" with the help of Litchfield Imports (suspension set-up), Tracktive (geometry) and AST UK. In total it took about 2hrs with Iain and then geometry changes with Tracktive. A lot of people profess to be experts in this area, but I only trust those with results that back that up.
The car has been "scary"...... now it is controllable and very quick. There is a distinct difference.

Thanks Shaun - I think you have 3-way adjustable ASTs whereas mine are the lowly 12-ways, where you can only adjust rebound. I have played with the settings in the past and have settled on a softer 5-off-softest at the front for the road, compared to 10 or 11 on the track - I will have a play and see if the harder settings minimise the lift/torque steer.
Having just paid Curtis to service the rear ASTs (including one brand new one as it was seized ) I don't really want to junk the correct setup just yet
But I will speak to Iain in due course, once the map tweaked and I'm more used to the car

Tim,
The single adjustment on yours adjusts both rebound and compression. Yes I do have the 3 ways. You do not need this extra functionality for what you need to do though.

One step forward, one step back...clouds of smoke again this morning, so much so that it made the road behind me look very foggy
Parked up and found oil dribbling on to ground via the headers, in the vicinity of the cam covers. An hour or 2 later no oil on dipstick at all and a rather messy road
Looks like a seal's gone somewhere (at least, I hope that's all it is). So, deep joy, it was back on to an AA recovery vehicle to be taken up S4U where it's now patiently waiting to be looked at

Well gents picked my car saturday and must thank Iain and the guys for an A1 job.
Everything has been done as discussed and he has even lent me a ECU with a base map on it so i could get back home on.
As it wouldn't run with my Simtek at all, now just gotta wait until Simon (JGM) remaps my Simtek tomorrow, then it will .
Must admit it already sounds very
So i'll be posting up my results once its all finished tomorrow.

Excellent results mate
So good in fact, makes me wana keep my Spec C & do what you have, iv got a lot of the bits already apart from turbo & injectors
You need to do Silverstone with us & see how it performs on track.

Brilliant results Mel/Simon, right on the money That is a massive useable power band, bet it feels really strong in the mid range as well!
The colour, wheels and now the engine make just about the perfect Spec C!
Iain
PS don’t forget to send back my ECU

Iain,
Cracking results.
Mel,
You must be over the moon. Looks from the graph that it comes on boost really well. 1.5bar at circa 3700 on a rolling road, would suggest it would pull boost sooner on the road in 5th / 6th. Nice one.

Thanks for all the replys guys.
Ricky - take that for sale ad down mate!!!
Ring Iain and get the conversion down, you def wont be dissapointed. If you want we can meet up soon so you can have a test drive to see what its like. When is the next silverstone track day by the way??
Iain - ECU is wrapped up and ready to come out to you this lunchtime, cant say thanks enough for the loan of that.
Shaun - Its seems to drive pretty much as my old turbo did so really glad i haven't the driveabilty of the car and due to the lower gearing of the JDM 6 speed box 5th/6th are just as lively as 3rd/4th .
Simon - I know Mikes car would make great power, its was in good hands.
Bet he has happy he has moved up on Charlies wall of fame now
p.s cold starting this morning was spot on too!!!
