upgrade for me too. head says blackberry bold, heart says iPhone 3G. am i just jumping on the apple bandwagon. have always used SE (the P900, P910, P990 and now the P1i) and have found them to be great phones.
the hype with apple is enormous. i am not a big phone user (my average minutes over the last 6 months have been about 200 same for texts). i have my ipod classic for my music, but i do like my gadgets and i like cool phones.
someone convince me that the the blackberry is the better option. i have read some reviews on various blogs and forums and they all have their pros and cons. anyone used both for comparison.
TIA
Sinky

lol I saw page 2 and had hope DS but you let us BB'ers down haha.
Chop, I have to admit putting a 3g bold and an EDGE (2.75g) equipped 8900 together, the speed of page loading was almost identical.
Prefer the size and weight of the 8900, and would be happy to lose a little connection speed. Even on 2g its never THAT bad

Not interested in fancy apps, and prefer using a fast full real qwerty keyboard.
Connection speeds are good, reliability excellent, software updates free and frequent, sync'ing is so easy, set up and using is straight forward.
As you say, iPhones are 90% hype. And regardless of their advertising, they are pretty closed off as far as I can see. People are developing apps for the BB left right and centre, and most are either free or cheap.
Me and touch screens dont get on, I like to know I have pressed a key, so for me, the BB is the answer.
PS get the 8900 Curve
Unless that extra speed is ultra important to you (where 3g is available)
Just as a comparison (based on full signal)
GPRS Class 10 32 - 48 kbps
EDGE Class 10, 236.8 kbps
3G HSDPA, 3.6 Mbps

Don't bother with a case, makes it even bulkier.
I fitted this and it cleans up like new everytime:
ZAGG | invisibleSHIELD | Apple iPhone 3G Cases, Screen Protectors, Covers, Shields, Skins, Invisible Shield
Got mine from Ebay.

Invisible SHIELD Full Body Protector for Apple iPhone on eBay, also, Other Mobile Phone Accessories, Mobile Phone Accessories, Mobile Home Phones (end time 13-Mar-09 14:47:20 GMT)
It does take about 30mins to fit and you do need some patience, although the end result is well worth it IMO.

Big thing for me, is the screen on the iPhone is EVERYTHING. If it breaks, the phone is finished. If a key on the BB breaks, life goes on (in limp mode) lol.

You definatly need it, or just prefer to have it.
Side by side, I would pick the 8900 to be honest, smaller, lighter, and better camera. The EDGE does me fine But you know what sort of signal you need I guess.
Im sure if you get a BB you will not be disappointed, and its nice to be a bit different lol. Although there is a big BB revolution at the mo. Becoming a lot more popular.

on O2 i can get unlimited wifi or unlimited data but not both for free. why does the iPhone 3G get both on the £35/month tarriff? bit confused now. the BB8900 i can get for free on the £35/mth contract. the BB9000 is £50 (about the same price as the 8GB iPhone). is there a subsidy in there for apple with the free wifi and unlimited data. seems a bit strange to me. O2 must be pushing the iPhone big time as opposed to the BB. will EDGE be fast enough for gps google maps?

You can use Blackberry Maps for the GPS mate, no need to use google if you dont want to, but in general yes it will be fine, unless the map is zoomed right in and you are doing 140mph lol
As for the iPhone, they will be subsidising yes, without a doubt, its their unique selling point, so they have to make sure it sells. They will make their money on the insurance side of things.
I would go for the 8900 for free. Check CrackBerry.com ? The #1 Site for BlackBerry Users & Abusers for comments on the GPS, maps and data
Im not sure why they advertise unlimited WiFi to be honest, surely you dont pay to use WiFi? I sure dont lol. Only for the initial net connection, but WiFi is local based and not network based.

Ok, got the thing registered. How long before the sim starts to work and I have reception?
Also, though it says my phone is fully synced when I press the ipod icon none of my tunes I've stored using itunes are there, its empty
I bought the phone as an o2 upgrade and was given a new sim card to put into it. Will the sim in my old phone stop working at exactly the same time as the new one stops working?
Thanks

As for the sim card I hope yours gets activated quicker than mine did, took over 24hrs cos the guy in the 02 shop had activated the wrong number

Snazy,
How do I get google maps on my bold? I find the BB ones pretty shoddy.
I see your point that the 8900 has benefits over the bold. I got my bold last october and the 8900 wasn't available at the time so I have never did a direct comparison. They seem much of a muchness, I am just very pro the bold as I have found it so good. Not had the chance to have a play with the 8900 but looking forward to doing so.

I like my Blackberry Curve and am very happy that my company upgraded from the old ones that we used to have. But it isn't anywhere close to the iPhone as a general 'toy'.

That's a really good example actually, PS3 and X Box. Each to their own at the end of the day I guess.
Personally though, I would not be without my BB now

However, the new generation BB's 8900/9000 are completely different and have all the toys of a iphone. The 8320 is very very basic compared to these.
