I thought the Bold is supposed to be the premier Blackberry? I'm soon to be the same position as Deep so i'm finding this thread useful too

Nokia launching their version soon too, so that should be interesting
There are some good tariffs out there at the moment, but you have to use them fully to get your monies worth out of some of them

HTC Touch Diamond - awesome piece of kit Win mobile 6.1 with a nice skin (touchflo) or turn off the touchflo for faster but not as pretty performance. The bundled Opera browser is excellent as is the youtube app. Emails are a dream with full push functionality if you want it, can also work with exchange servers.
Only downside is battery life but with built in 3G, GPS, bluetooth etc. and the ability to act as a modem (6kb/sec average on Vodafone) it's excellent - obviously can also do wi-fi as well (or act as a wi-fi router with the correct software installed. Excellent integration with outlook via active sync.

Spec superb, interface lovely, appearance a little quirky (what were they thinking lol) but over all an excellent phone I agree
You mention syncing, I have to say the BB is without a dount the easiest to sync and back up. Also the OS updates are lovely, the latest for mine is speeding along, and so much available for them, that does not sit there and slow the phone down.

I've just got a palm treo pro which is just fantastic. Got a deal with vodafone - about £35 quid a month for unlimited texts, unlimited internet and 600 mins anytime, any network.
Been very very easy to get to grips with, internet is quick and it's windows mobile based so you can do practically anything on it.
Thoroughly recommended

The Bold and iPhone are both 133g
The 8900 Curve however is 23g's lighter than both Another reason I would choose it over the Bold

Oh just reread your 1st post and you say it doesn`t have to be a phone, i`ve just this week bought an Advent 4213 netbook it has a built in dongle that you can put a PAYG sim card that has data enabled on and and browse for as little as 30p a day. I`ve tried my Virgin sim card in and works a treat
Advent 4213 Netbook - Cheap Advent Netbooks. Buy the Advent 4213 Netbook at PC World.

Hi Deep
I find the screen is far sharper, the interface/os is quicker and eaiser to use, the internet is just as quick, it stores music which is easy to transfer on (i also hate itunes), plays films/tv programs and the screen for this is like my lcd at home, blackberry email speaks for itself. The only downside is that the camera is far from the best.
It basically does exactly the same as the iphone, it just doesn't have the apple hype (or problems!), it has a reputation as a business phone but for me the excellent email is just one side to the Bold.

Was playing with a Storm this morning. I quite like it. Touch screen seems ok when emailing/texting. I have sausage fingers, but imagine it'd be easy to get used to. Hmmm

I'd also look at the HTC Touch HD. The screen is 85 x 50mm. Runs on 3.5G or WiFi. Does push mail if needed. Can be used as a modem on a laptop.
Runs windows mobile 6.1 so will syncronise with Outlook.
HTC - Products - HTC Touch HD - Overview
It comes with some stocks program, but I've never used it:
2008 December 04 Fresh Gear Weblog
Can be found on O2 contracts.
Very pleased with mine so far.

Awesome bit of kit, does everything, big screen is great for web browsing, use the built in Wi-Fi when in range or mobile network when it isn't.

Thanks Chop.
The Bold it is then, I'm off to the shops today to get one.
Must say the se x1 looks very nice with great specs, but read quite a few complaints about it on the net re; phone reception and software glitches that put me off. I once had a se and it was unreliable.
iphone seems to have lots of happy customers, but it just looks a bit fragile for my needs.
Not bothered by camera function and don't listen to mp3 ( have all my music ripped using FLAC on a nas)
so, the conclusion for me is the Blackberry. I think its cooler than the iphone aswell (flame suit on)
Thanks to all for the fantastic advice and opinions

A different point of view:
YouTube - iPhone vs BlackBerry Bold
I can't see why you'd choose something primarily for web browsing with half the screen size.

Deep, visit Crackberry.com and read up on how to flash the phone with newer firmware as there has been a lot of updates that have really improved the phone, but unfortunately the UK operators are very slow to approve new versions and hence get left behind.
I'm running mine on beta .247, I believe .244 is now official -

Well went to buy the Blackberry and ended up buying an iphone
Guy at the shop (who seemed quite balanced) thought that for what I'm after the iphone would be better. Could have been a commission issue but he seemed quite honest.
I just thought that for web browsing the phone with the bigger screen must be better. Also it had a stocks icon and software on it, I'm sure you can do something similar with the BB, but it just seemed easy.
Anyway at work now and so can't fire it up because need to connect to my PC. There are no instructions in the box!
How do I get it started?? I don't even know where the sim card goes!

Deep, just install iTunes if you don't already have it and it should all be self explanetary when all connected up to the computer, once it's been recognised by the computer. Enjoy!
