I'd be pretty screwed after 3 months.

1 of the first things I'd to cut corners is start shooting vermin species again. Alot more than I do now. Rabbit is suprizingly nice, isp can go too.

I'm in a very lucky position.

Mortgage payed off
No Car loan
Cash in Bank

I'd certainly cut back without money coming in. Cancel mobile phone deal. Cancel Broadband etc etc.

I could go a fair few years just on savings, if spending was tightly controlled, but it would kill me seeings all my saving going after working so hard to make them.

I could always live with my Girlfriend and rent my flat out if it came to it.

One of my mates and his gf moved to Spain a week ago after he lost his job in Jan.Paid his Debts left the flat gave the car to his sister. My other mate as got his house up for sale and is moving to New Zealand after 5 yrs of thinking about it(typical of him to try and sell his house at the worst possible time). The other one was offered a job transfer and moved to Canada. If things went **** up tomorrow i would pay what's left on my credit card and go on holiday sit on the beach with a drink and have a think if i would come back here or not..

I was threatened with redundancy in 1995 and secured a job before it happened. Second time around I didn't get a chance, it was into the office and told 'clear your desk'. Secured a new position on 47% more money and 100 extra days off a year 2 weeks later. I enjoyed the extra cash for a few years, owning and running a Scoob for most of it, but eventually my sensible head took over and I sold the Scoob (just before the market for them went bang ) and put some of that cash into training for a safety net occupation. So, I now w*rk 3 nights a week at my primary job and (usually, took 3 months off recently) 2 days a week teaching driving. If the main job goes ****, then I ramp up the driving school hours Without that safety net though we wouldn't last long with no/reduced income Ideally I want to be mortgage free within 10 years to free up options in life. Whether we move to a beautiful area in this country or consider emigration, I really need to be away from UK cities sometime soon.

I'm a contractor, nature of the job means you have to have backup for the hard times, although some don't. Just been extended(again) to June so fingers crossed I'm in the right role to get me through the recession in employment.

Its a tricky industry but we aren't too bad.

We have a mortgage but it is well within our limits, we never went mad deliberately. The other mortgage is easily outstripped by the rental income so that's ok and if the worst came to the worst I'd simply sell the flat. Thanks to overpaying the mortgage and the fact i bought it off plan quite a while ago even with the 20k drop in value it has taken it is still worth about 30k more than the mortgage.

Plus i'm on a 3 month notice so between that and the savings i guess we'd be ok for a few months at least. I would go out and get another job though. I've been unemployed before and tarted myself about immediately. Never had to claim and never want to.

5t.

I have irons in fires so to speak plus a nice little application being worked on for a postion out in Dubai for a few years tax free will do me nicely.

If its a viable option to work out there then i'll keep the house, my stuff & have the scoob firmly planted with RCM and pick it up on my return....

SIR SIR pnbond POSTED A POTENTIAL SALARY SIR. THAT'S BANNED IN THE GREEN EYED BOOK OF SN BITTERNESS SIR! A detention at the very least.

If it all went wrong (being a company owner means I'm unlikely to sack myself) I think I'd buy a camper and travel Europe with wife and our little boy. Then move to SW France.

Does constantly pointing out that you are a 'company owner', also carry the same offence?

Chris - I could "own" Shell oil or "own" a table selling daffs on the side of the road. Being a company owner is not showing off. Except to you and a few others of course...

Plenty of people are 'Company Owners' ... means nowt, I wouldn't read too much into it - unless, of course, it is a Company employing 6,500 people THEN I would be impressed!! Last time I looked you could buy a Company for £39

Back to the OP - I would, maybe uniquely, be very pleased if I lost my job tomorrow ...... my package would be rather satisfactory

I think all this financial turmoil has given me an idea

I might take the corporate $ for a few more years, very good salary, but lacking in guilt edge pension

Then about 10 years before retirement jump ship to work for the local authority, I’ll obviously have to grow a beard, develop a taste for real ale wear a tatty tweed jacket and open toed sandals

I might have to take a drop in salary, but the final salary pension would suit, to get the post I would convince them of my dynamism having worked in the private sector, but would soon slip into the culture of long lunches “duvet days” and generally doing sod all

I don't owe anything and earn well but it would really bugger us up, school fees are covered but everything else would be panic stations, can do without things like Sky and Mobiles but not heat, light, food, clothes etc.

I do think though that this pales into insignificance compared to the last world war and what people had to put up with, you wont die from not having Sky or a takeaway, downsizing your car rarely makes your house explode.

Sometimes being made to backtrack financially is actually quite cathartic and the change does you good, don't see this as a problem, see it as an opportunity, it just might require more effort and ingenuity, life is about living not stuff, you can enjoy life without a lot of money, though I agree debt is very wearing on people and the only way to deal with that is to speak to someone, not take any more on and focus on paying it off, like losing weight there are no real sustainable shortcuts.

Nat, there is a knock on if everyone goes on lockdown, cautious carrying on as if nothing has happened is the way to go if you can afford it.
