Of course when you're sat in your M5 going 30 mph exactly your going to wait for a 535d to get level with you and stop at 70mph. Real world it's not going to happen.
How exactly would a modded 330d leave a bugeye for dead. Or are we having the fictious 30-70 races against the clock.

I cannot believe the fanboy nature that is being (in)bred on this site.
Scoobs have not been the be all and end all performance bargains of the century for some 10 years now. They went mainstream and are dieing on their **** because of it.

where do we stand on legacy diesels, coz I'm fancying one of them.
can't imagine getting something as horrible as a BMW I'm afraid, regardless of all its torque.
in the real world: where exactly is all this power ever used......... I've a lovely impreza but the reality of getting a chance to wring its ugly neck is few and far between.

Not really. An F1 car, being a race car needs maximum work done at any time so instead of looking for tractability that is low end torque, they are designed to make use of revs to generate a lot of horsepower over a wide powerband instead. (HorsePower = Work Done)
An engine generating 650bhp at 18000rpm is only actually making 190ftlb of torque at peak power.
By Comparison, A Subaru making 650bhp at 8000rpm has 426ftlb of torque at peak power.
Torque = (HPx5252) / RPM

E46 vs E39 with the equivalent engine and gearbox : 85kg (330d M-sport manual: 1615kg!! vs 530d M- sport manual: 1700kg ) The gap is even closer with petrol engines (depending on spec).
And same engined E60 vs E90 is just 55kg! (330d M-sport manual: 1535kg vs 530d M- sport manual: 1590kg ).
That makes a E90 530d LIGHTER than a E46 330d! Mixing it up a little when looking at the petrol engines: A 530 sport manual is actually lighter than a 330 sport automatic!
Obviously the 50-85kg advantage of a 3series is lost if your passenger is on the weighty side But I tell you what, its something the 3-series fans boys have difficulty accepting, they don't like it up 'em, I tell ya.

1. The 330d is nowhere near as dynamic to drive as any Subaru Impreza is. 2. The 330d had a major oil leak as well as an electrical fault, both occasions requiring the car to go to BMW dealership for around 3-4 days each time.
3. It was parked on a grass verge in suburban London, not the tropics, and after a moderate amount of rainfall, I was unable to move the car forwards or backwards, it had to be pushed as it was slipping. This would have NEVER happened in an Subaru Impreza.
4. In just a little drizzle, pulling away gently from lstandstill would always have the traction control light flickering continuously.
People confuse massive torque and equate it to actual driveability. A car with massive toque will not necessarily be quicker than a car with less torque.

It will not necessarily quicker, but often is!!
I confess to having owned a BMW E46 330CI, E39 530d, an STi V with 550bhp and a Spec C with 350/360.
I can say from ten years of experience that in any race between them the BMW will always win hands down, petrol or diesel,

Only one way to settle this. Who's got a late 330d, lives near someone with a scooby and is prepared to post the resulting 30 to 70 on youtube?

I've got both a 330d AND a scooby, and frankly I couldn't give a toss which is quicker. Some days I'm in the mood for one, other days it's the other. It's nice to have the choice, each has its strengths and weaknesses.
Yesterday was a BMW day. Today was a scooby day and I think tomorrow will be too

A lot of the seriously old school Impreza owners have a something from the BMW stable with an M57 derived engine for daily use and an Impreza as a toy, and if you have driven one you will know why

old mans cars get more looks in a scooby certain individuals with beemers shudnt be posting on this site gt your own club instead of slaggin off subarus i have driven all the new beemers and they r quick but subarus win every time for me just my thoughts wether right or wrong regards

Why is it that people think that Subarus are the fastest cars on the road ?
So we're out one night mapping an STi8, full decat, usual job and we do a test run. Normally cars behind disappear but this time one stayed with us and then passed us.... odd we thought, then read what it said on the back... SL55 AMG... ah, yeah, that makes sense, it's a 5.5 litre supercharged engine that makes 500BHP and just over 500lb/ft torque. Oh, OK then.
Another day I'm out mapping an Evo 6 for an engine builder / mapper that doesn't have the software. He's got the cans and is pressing on trying to make it knock but something stays with us... odd we thought and then observe that it's an E64 M6, yeah, he's also got over 500BHP.... oh, OK then.
Thing is when you're only interested in one make you lose sight of what else is out there, what else is interesting. BMW are passionate about two things... engines and chassis...
The M57 engine is phenomenal. It has won International Engine of the Year awards in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2006, that doesn't happen by accident. The S85 engine is quite possibly the most advanced engine ever to go into a road car and has won International Engine of the Year awards consecutively since its introduction.
The handling of those BMWs that are supposed to be fun and not sedate people-moving-machines is something that Subaru can only aspire to. Beyond that, what precisely is not fun about having 380lb/ft there available *immediately* with no turbo lag at all because it's an N/A on port throttles ? What's not fun about putting that down through the rear wheels ? Sometimes you have to wonder....
The 330d/530d is astonishingly good at what it does, getting you from A to B with the least amount of fuss, not having to stop 3 times to fill up, being able to overtake just by breathing on the accelerator because there's a mountain of torque there. It is the most complete car I've had the pleasure of driving or being a passenger in. It is not the most fun. It is not the fastest. It is not the most comfortable. It is not the most fuel efficient. It's just the best compromise of all of these things.

My 'old mans' diesel BMW gets used every day- whereas the Impreza stays in the garage. I do love it, and use it from time to time, but usually for no more than a day. I then put it back in the garage under its dust cover. I just find it far too tiring to drive. Maybe its an age thing. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
As far as the 'get you're own club' comments are concerned- lets have a poll. How many people on Scoobynet actually own- or have ever owned- or have any prospect of ever owning- a Subaru???

a 2.5 wrx with 280/310lbs is enough to make a 330d disappear in your rear view mirror, and the only way the beemer can catch up is if its got blue lights behind the grill

all very well said. Here at Trout Hall the Spec C has gone but the 530d remains!!
I thought I would be sensible but that has lasted a week. I am now looking at a car that has around 50bhp more than the Spec C and weighs around 50kgs less.
Should be nippy then, even without the mountain of torque

Perhaps it was the tale of Pat, three up in his 1/4 million mile barge with a missfire upsetting an EVO that made me plump for mine even if it is an auto Think we need to plug your lap top in again Pat and do some ahem diagnostics
