I work in the print trade, and the company I work for hires in a great many agency immigrant workers on a temporary basis. Our government allow this to happen by not imposing regulations designed to ensure British people get British jobs. I believe each one costs us around £15/hr which goes to the agency, whom then pay the migrant NMW, creaming the rest for themselves. I am sure this works out cheaper economically for our company as they don't get holidays, sick pay or pension entitlements, and the agency meets all their tax/NI contributions. It also means they can reduce/increase the workforce at a whim as production demands it, so it's a win/win/win all 'round for the companies.

I recall seeing a documentary a few years ago about the building of a mosque in London where all the builders and stone masons were employed in India under Indian laws, and paid Indian wages in India whilst being kept in accommodation on site, with all sustenance provided. I commented at the time that this practise was sure to increase as the financial benefits outweigh any moral obligations. Looking beyond the initial balance sheet however, when you have a nation of 60m+ people whom are all unemployed, these companies will have starved themselves of their own market

The demonstrators are local men who are qualified and experienced to do the work yet they are unemployed because the work is given to foreigners then that is just wrong.

When a British company gets a foreign contract then they have to employ local labour with the exception of higher management positions. I know of an oil rig that has just made its British manual workers redundant because they have moved the rig to Greece and have to employ local greeks (which is fair enough) but then when our own cant get work on the doorstep because its full of Italians then it just takes the p1ss.

Protectionism will deepen the global depression yet nation states will instinctively follow this path. Catch 22.

lol - I see that The 13th Duke of Wybourne is still alive and well and commenting on the Guardian article.

Gregor Gall: Gordon Brown's slogan 'British jobs for British workers' has come back to haunt him, as workers' protests gather momentum | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

There no longer appear to be any Nu Labour supporters left, even among the Guardian readers these days.

It's amazing how words can come back to haunt. This isn't anything new though things have been building up to this point for some time. Now with all these job cuts and what not,it's just pushed British workers to the limit of anger and protest sooner. What get's frustrating too is when you get these experts saying well were in Europe so British workers can go get jobs in France for example if they want to,well that's true. But country's like France, belgium, spain, etc, will always put their own Nationality first before any other regardless of being in Europe.Seems like the Brits are smacked in the face and pushed out again.Gordon Clown saying he understands is laughable..

I have no problem with foreign workers being employed to work on UK sites

British workers* are amongst the laziest I've ever encountered, they've had it so easy for too many years, and all thanks to the Union policies that so successfully crippled our automotive industry in the '70s and the mines in the '80s

* Strangely this appears to be a UK based issue only, whenever one encounters British workers abroad, especially in the petrochemical industry, they are definitely amongst the most dedicated, and hardest working

So the British tenders were more expensive and would take longer to complete.

Surely someone is either being greedy, which has bascially forced these jobs out of the UK!

But as I said before, if Labour started to do that, they'd have no-one left to blame when THEIR sh*t hit the fan, would they?

My eldest, a welder/plater, has had three days off for illness in his life, he does whatever job his foreman gives him, completes it and then goes back to ask what to do next. He is often told to hide until the next day.

Stop talking CRAP about British Workers, you obviously have little experience of them.

And as for the unions...........who has crippled the car industry now? themselves, by charging higher prices in the UK than anywhere else in Europe, in an effort to keep prices LOW for mainland Europe, followed by the Labour party with it's stupid anti-motoring taxes
