im sorry mate, but if you do searches on most cars you will find stuff like this, people only go on sites like that to moan, you cant sell that many cars an everyone of them are perfect. got to agree with the customer care though, thats exactly why the likes of bmw and lexus are so highly rated, there customer care is outstanding

Me and my mates went touring down Cornwall, me in a R32, mate in his Disco Tdi.
We both managed the same MPG (29ish IIRC), but it cost him more as the fuel was more expensive
Oh and his one rear airbag on the suspension developed a leak too which meant it gained a very precarious list when parked up overnight
His had the active roll control (not sure if its standard or extra, it was extra on the older version), this doesn't half help reduce the sea-sick inducing ride round the back roads, where a normal air-sprung 4x4 will be wallowing like a fishing boat in a force 8 storm.
Other things that broke during the trip was the gearbox going into limp home whenever going from reverse to drive, so had to turn off the engine and re-start to be able to drive it again (new switch sorted it). Also suffered severe brake fade when hammering it round the back roads and warped the disks (well, keeping up with traffic isn't really hammering it, but it is 2 tons, so the brakes have a hard time).

I'm a Landy nut, but I don't think I'd have a Disco3
I've got a Defender 300 DTi at the moment and it's a fantastic big machine. 15 years of abuse later and still going strong!
You can chuck anything into the back of it, park it anywhere without worrying about door dings and if anyone is daft enough to pull out infront of you they are quickly shown the errors of their ways
Plus there's not much that'll stop it - apart from crazy deep mud

I had a RR for 8 years -- and although I would never recommend them to anyone -- I loved it, right down to the BL Montego switch gear and the chocolate brown leather interior

I saw a white one downstairs from my house the other day, I have to say I love the design too, think they're a great looking machine. As I walked past it I noticed that both headlights were full of water about 2 thirds full... Not a good sign...

LR build quality can suffer from time to time.
I had one of the first TDV8 Vogues when it came it a couple of years ago & it had electrical gremlins, it eventually got written off by my ex. I now after a couple of Mercedes 4x4's have the RRS & cant fault it. Although its only months old it starts everytime (unlike the last one) & is used as a daily driver. My old man also has a RRS although his is a TDV6 & he hasnt had any issues apart from corroding alloys that LR changed without any hesitation.
I personally cant fault my local dealer (Taggarts, Motherwell)
Cant answer for for the Disco3 .... sorry.

R32 vs Disco?!!
Having said that I "raced" a 4.8is X5 in my mk4 R32 and it was neck and neck all the way to 70. It just looked so wrong seeing such a huge vehicle go so fast!
Although the R32 is 4WD, it's Haldex and doesn't really cope with anything that isn't tarmac. Snow confuses it as does ice. It also has the clearance of a F1 car - sort of.

I went from Northampton to Leeds in about 1h 20 min once at 2am in an R32 and that included stopping for a splash and dash at the servies. Not me driving btw! When the lad who's car it was (leased) took it back after 12 months the dealer said they'd never ever seen such an abused and broken car

However, my Discovery 3 is a dream to drive, so smooth. In a different league all together

My R32 struggled in very light snow - so no!
The R32 has 4WD but it's about as well adapted to off roading as a Disco is to track racing.
We've had our Jimny doing similar to that Landy. I must remember to take some pics next time. They are unbelievably capable off road and Jap so don't break down.

Right first things first get your ****ing facts right for starters
2 We are not bankrupt in fact far from it we are 1 if not the strongest motor producer in the uk at present. Honda no production till end of feb,Bmw same, Mercedes shutting 12 of its plants for good!! BMW X5/X3 production !!! mmm.
Theres some damn good buys out there at present but price dropping isnt just hitting L/R ,look how cheap you can get X5's,Porsche cayenne,VW toureg's the list goes on .
Were all in the same game mate making a living but one thing we dont produce is crap

Not the companys fault or the products you make, although most are long in the tooth now. Its just the current economic climate and very quick change of the market with people deserting 4x4's, even diesel ones. This years sales figures have started even worse for LR. Remember its cars sold not produced that makes money, which is why people like Honda have done the correct thing and cut production.
Good luck at LR its going to get difficult - Sales figures for Jan 09 are down 62.4% compared to Jan 08 (which wasn't a good year either!), but Jag did well in Jan 09, sales up 25% compared to Jan 08 with 2000 units sold in Western Europe compared to 1600 for Jan 08.
LR have the worst change in sales out of any European Car Manufacturer second was Saab with -55.4% decrease in sales and we know how much trouble they are in.

R32 vs Disco?!!
so you were racing
And in the same, why the hell would I take an R32 off-roading? (barring the muddy campsite, which it coped perfectly). It was also superb in the snow over the last few weeks, even with horrible Pirelli Rosso summer tyres too, far more controllable than my last scoob ever was.
Having said that; Like 95% of Discos on the road it will never see any real off-road use and this one is no exception either. Not whilst there is a Series IIA landy with a hybrid RR chassis on his driveway. The stuff that thing goes through you'd never put a disco 3 through, for fear of how much it'll cost to fix when it does gets damaged (and it will) also the standard M+S tyres wouldn't get it very far on boggy clay.
I also have a Series II Lightweight for proper muddy stuff or if it ever does snow properly or I have to go somewhere thats muddy to the point I can't use whetever car I have at the time: i.e when I want to off-road. But I can hardly take that on a 800mile touring holiday. Even with the Fairey overdrive and 3.5:1 diffs it'll only scrape 10mpg, so hardly suitable for that purpose.
can a R32 do that as well?

The disco 4 is out soon with the diesel HSE priced at 46k, Its already available for sept delivery at 30k if you know the right people. That is going to really depreciate. Every one who pays 46k for one will cry after year 1 depreciation.
