For all you retro arcade boys!
Shaun, you can get pins up the stairs easy enough, the back box comes off, not much of a job to do.
Nat, no doubt a lot of those Chinese games were bootlegs, no value in those.
Mart, I've had or still own most of the classics that I liked as a kid, but always wanted a Robotron 2084 or a Donkey Kong.

Nice
My missus kindly let me buy myself a Mortal Kombat II in authentic cab a while back..... but only if I let her have a Tales from the Crypt pinball
Had them for about 18 months until we sold the house and had to make it look like we had plenty of room.
Not that great showing a dining room half full with two arcade machines
I wondered about seeing if I could get a PC in there and have it switchable with MAME but never got further than thinking about it....

GOOner,
Maybe you can help me.... I was going through the OSD on the touch screen monitor and selected one option that has now turned off the OSD. If I push the OSD button now (it is one of the push and rotate **** variety) it does not bring the OSD up.
Any idea how this can be switched back on?
Will leaving the machine off for a period of time re-enable the OSD?

I am busy getting some "choice" NAMOI / DC shooters to work on it now. I can see this turning in to a full-time job for the next couple of weeks.
G00ner,
Sorted now!

Just installed some SNES stuff on it today..... I can't believe how good I had forgotten Super Mario World is. I have been playing it for over 2hrs.
I have got eight games I bought for the 360 over the past month and have not even switched it on or loaded the games up yet.... I have been thrashing the cab every night for over a week!
Best thing I have bought in a long time.
urban,
Christ.... you must be a right old git then!

Well... I haven't got off this thing since I bought it. I have spent a lot of time customising the frontend and getting other emulators to work. I am now nearing completion and I am already looking for another, better, cab. This time I will do the whole thing myself.... i.e. converting a cab to run emulators.
It all run's very slick now and have the following stuff emulated and looking cool:
Mame (obviously)
Namco System22 stuff (Ridge Racer etc)
Sega Model 2 stuff (Daytona etc)
Super Nintendo
Mega Drive
N64
Dreamcast (all the good shoot 'em ups together with VF4, Virtua Tennis etc etc
)
Virtual Pinball / PINmame (which is an awesome pinball emulator using the original code - it plays and sounds like the real thing)
I am also playing with several Fruit Machine emulators, which work the same way as any emulator. It's like playing the original thing.
Loads more to do but I will get some more pics up, hopefully over the weekend, of this running some other stuff.
It all works seamlessly through the frontend, so you can launch everything via the joysticks and buttons.

What a ball ache that has all been. Ensuring links to game screenshots all work correctly for the frontend drove me mad!!
I am awaiting the latest .29 mame set in the post, so that should be the final bit (apart from sorting out and installing my Megadrive emulator).
Anyway.... I will get some pics up tonight of the other non-mame stuff emulated on my cab.

Not as old as you'd think.
Worked for a company who did arcade conversions to C64, Amiga, Atari ST, Speccy & Amstrad.
We did conversions for Ocean Software, US Gold & Konami.
Wasn't much fun I tell you.
PS - Another developer at the time used to do the software for fruit machines - steer clear was his advice back then.

You must be older than me..... I was still at school during that era and I am 38 in March!!!
I was only talking to SDB about this yesterday and we both agreed, that it was awesome to of been part of the generation that has seen all this gaming history and remember what it was like first hand.
I doubt the young 'uns of today would appreciate all of this, as they are too used to the XBOX and PS generation. Even Arcades are a thing of the past for gaming, compared to what they used to be like. They are all full of fruit machines and grabbers now!!!

the big one shortly after that
I started working pretty much after school.
Was a C64 6502/6510 assembly language geek from about age 15 - didn't get out much
Looking back I had a fantastic time really.
Earned quite a lot of money for that period of time with completion bonus getting achieved.
Distinctly remember one time - going to work on a Friday and not leaving until Sunday in order to get the game finished for Monday's deadline.
Everntually the place closed up - I reckon US Gold realised it would be cheaper to relocate eejits from Northern Ireland to the US and work for them directly.
I declined the offer
- too young and innocent back then
Boy o boy.
I still have my old C64 with a tape drive and floppy drive for sentimental reasons.

ROFLOL at Scoobymad!
I always remember the constant statement between each generation of computer / console "Arcade Perfect"! My ****!!!

It was only until consoles like the Dreamcast (as that was for all intent and purpose was NAOMI hardware for a number of Sega NAOMI games) actually made that statement real.
I still remember backing up the hype when things like "hypersports" came out for the Spectrum and saying.... WOW that is the same as the Arcade Machine.
How wrong were we all..... I suspect the fact that the display was not made up of ASCii characters like the ZX81 was, made it arcade perfect!!

Depends on whether you want "cheap" or "good".
Knowing what I know now I think I could transform most cabs to mame etc.
It also depends on how authentic you want it and also depends on emulators you want to run. Mame does not require as higher spec PC as something like nulldc the Dreamcast emulator.
Tell me what you would want the cab to do, how realistic to the original you want it and of course whether size is a factor (as this restricts type of cabs you could use) and I could give you some approximate costs.

I'd be happy with a MAME cab, not too worried about authenticity, as long as it had the right number of buttons and joysticks id be happy. Im guessing most recent PC's could run mame and ive got one with a 17" monitor sat doing nothing. The frontend confuses me, but thats only because i havent looked into that much.
Any info/help appreciated!

Many ways to skin a cat, so for some more info and price estimates.....
Cabinet
In your case, any old piece of crap will do (joke). But seriously, you can pick up old game cabs for next to nothing off ebay. The most important thing to you would be the condition of the cab and the screen inside. For mame you can stick with the original arcade monitor, so you would have to make sure this monitor is in good nick, as regards to screen burn, focus and convergence. Joystick and button wise, you would need to ensure that you have enough buttons etc.... but this can be sorted later on by customising if need be. You can pay as little as £50 for a cab up to well over £1000+ depending on what you want. Spares for the control panel are easy to find.
PC
You have this already, but should you choose to put the PC inside the cab you will probably need an ATX size one. I have mine in a ATX case, so it actually fits behind the main door at the front. PC spec wise for mame nothing special, a minimum of a P4 processor.... dual core really, 2gb of ram and onboard sound and graphics will do. You seem to have this, so no real cost.
Other
Depending on what cab you get you will need to interface between the JAMMA arcade control loom and your PC. For this you will need a JPAC. This not only lets you interface with the cab's controllers but also lets you connect to the cab's monitor (if you cab has a SVGA monitor, then the latter is redundant in theory). This board costs £40. You can get alternative interfaces for more recent cabs (non JAMMA) as well.
If you have a standard arcade monitor that is 15khz you will need to either purchase an additional videocard for your PC or use some free software to interface. Sending a normal 31khz PC signal to a 15khz arcade monitor will fry it. If using the software cost is zero.
So..... if you have the time and inclination then the costs are next to nothing in reality.
You obviously then need to configure the lot, which takes the time and the knowledge.... but I can certainly help you with that lot.
There are a number of different combinations, like using a brand new aftermarket control set-up, like the one from mine which is non JAMMA, so requires another interface card.... but the above gives you a overview.
