When i blew the head gasket on my old renault 5 due to me not bleeding it tidy , i got the local engine place near me to do the work.
The R5 run okay for about 4/5 months, but we had a major cold snap one day.... As i was going down the a470 the engine blew up again.
When the RAC guy had a look at the car it turned out that there was no coolant in the car, just water.
Had a go at the garage who done the work and their reply was " it was summer, and we never use coolant in the summer"...
So it was down to the driver to "realise" that there was no coolent in the car and flush it through when winter comes.

They re-done the work, but i had to pay towards their **** up...

I try to do all my own work on the car now, so at least i know whats been done !
It pays to double check any work other people have done to your car..

You should always have anti-freeze in as it usually has a rust inhibitor as well raw water and metal do not get on that well together.
Lucky that it did not pop a core plug when it froze though.

does anyone know where i can get coolant/antifreeze from, that would be suitable for a scoob, (not sure whether there is seperate coolant or not). I don't mean to hijack your problems, i just thought this would be the best thread to get this info. Thanks

That's ludicrous; I despair at the incompetence of some garages!

Anti-freeze coolant has 3 very important properties:

1) It's designed to aid with the carrying away of heat (than just water alone can manage).

2) As it's name suggests, it prevents the water content from freezing up in winter (with potentially disastrous consequences (as avoided - luckily - by the OP!)

3) As mentioned by shep_ppp, it has rust inhibitors designed in (for obvious reasons).

Still can't get my head around that garage's - outrageously flawed - policy!
