what about a more realistic: who has the best fast road set up that does not need 45 monkeys with spanners working on it every other weekend ?
my old Prodrive Legacy (ex Royal navy car) was about 280hp i was told. But what made it work well was how it drove and handled. I have tried a 400 bhp subaru and to be honest was not liking how it drove on normal roads. Or how it looked . i prefer as stealth as possible

My car is as oem in appearance as possible - the fmic is even painted black so as not to be so visible. True it's got a large RCM backbox and larger brakes, but that is the only non standard P1 bits from the outside. No stickers / chav lights etc
It's done several thousand miles and is currently commuting in and out of London without the use of spanner monkeys or anything else out of the ordinary. It's even mapped for just V power. Only real difference to OEM is that it has a forged engine so its slappy until the oil gets to around 80C and fully warms through, so i just keep it below 2K revs until then (about 10 mins).
450 is very usable and lag is virtually identical to my orginal OEM set up thanks to various other mods such as lightweight engine parts reducing the rotational masses and a good well mapped turbo set up. I can use pretty much all of the power at any time, unless it's really greasy, and as far not liking the 400 one - maybe the suspension/handling wasn't set correctly.
I am however saving up for a turbinator and once I've got that it'll rip the tarmac right off the road

Pete - it gets me about

They can be confusing in the real world too. I knew a guy with a 500+ Bugeye who couldn't keep up with my 260 WRX PPP His car was set up so stiff for straight-lining, with so much power that he couldn't use it effectively on a 'real' road. With even partial throttle a slight bump might be enough for him to break traction, and that could either spin the engine through the red line, or see him in a slide. He couldn't apply much throttle mid-bend as that would easily make things tricky, and so my humble standard powered car which flowed over bumps and ruts and glided around tight bends on WOT would leave him standing. Of course, sit me on the line next to him at Elvington and I'd wonder where he went. I still say that mid 300's is the optimum for fast road use, with supporting chassis/suspension mods. A Litchfield Type 20 Spec C is just about perfect in that respect.

Fuel consumption on the road not dissimilar to original either - maybe 10% worse?

My RB5 (101) when its was a 464/434 road car was spot on but know its a dedicated track car and gone up another 100bhp my other RB5 (203) could easily out run it on the road!
Massive difference between the setups & spec! makes all the difference!

Hi Corradoboy,
SP1 's car is sat at RE like an automotive xmas tree, sprinkled in quality baubles....
Hi A51,
bigarf has about 450 bhp, imf has around 400 bhp, mine should have about the same, but you wouldn't look twice at any of them in traffic.
We are all a bit coy and grown up to be honest.

Hmm sorry I'm a bit off topic with the standard internals comment. Ban the spammer though!

Whats it like having over 400 horses under your bonnet? I can't even imagine what its like I'm super pleased with the 260 my RA pushes so god knows what i'd do with 400
