Debenhams was relatively busy, not many buying - just looking and leaving empty-handed.

Gamestation still smells of BO and Pee - why do they all smell like that?

Game had a queue ... but the tills are designed to give that impression.

Modelzone was doing fair business.

Jewellers seemed empty.

My money is definately on BHS to go the way of Woolies.
Youi may well be right, and they won't be the only ones I'm afraid.

As the Co-Op have recently taken over Somerfield, I think you might be right about them going.
Although they may just be re-branded as Co-Op shops.

The writing's been on the wall for Zavvi since day one. Why did Branson sell Virgin Megastores? Because he saw this economic mess coming and didn't want the headache of competing against the other major shop HMV when people stopped getting their wallets out. Better to get out then, make a few quid selling the enterprise, and let some other sucker take the brunt of the recession. Bloody obvious that's what happened if you ask me.

Just been to MAKRO .... about 20 cars in a Car Park which I have seen filled to the brim with an overflow area also full a few Xmas's ago (about 400 spaces!).

Walking around and looking at what is on offer at what price gives the answer as to why it is so empty - you can buy pretty much EVERYTHING they have for sale, cheaper elsewhere. An this is supposed to be a WHOLESALER!!

I will add MAKRO to my list.

Well we ventured into town to do the last of our shopping today..god it was stressful

We were in town for 9.30 and didnt make it back until gone 5

went into many of the retailers mentioned and TBH I think the worst disgrace was WHSmith. Over priced and not really a great selection.

Comet, Currys, PC World wouldn't go bang straight away, they would consolidate first.
I would expect such like to happen next year but with an external retailer, not one of these biggies.
I know two of the three are looking to expand next year.

Jessops are planning a major retail expansion next year so I can't see them shutting up shop just yet.

I would expect a lot of web only retailers to go bang but you don't really see or feel the impact of that unlike a high street store.

On a happy note In-Store is always snided

Jessops can not get any credit from Canon UK. They are well and truly stuffed. I think they are losing their "pro dept" as well?

Jessops got funding a few months ago, so I believe they are good for at least another year?

I will update tomorrow < I know a man that know 100% the truth about Jessops. they might continue as a mail order only firm? but expect them to leave major high streets soon.

Not that they where any good !!! "Jacobs" is far better and offers a better trained level of staff.

Dixons, Currys, PC World and The Link are, and always have been, owned by one company.

Hence why they would consolidate

Edit*

Perhaps amalgamate is a better word, I can see this happening next year.

It's happened in the building trade already, it's far better to have a large store selling a variety of items than smaller stores specialising in a few.
SIG group comes to mind.

That's exactly the opposite to what I have heard regarding Jessops, I know they are actively tendering for next years roll out.

Funny you should mention Jacobs, Anthony Jacob must have took a hit on the premises he bought as HQ a few years back, took his pension afaik.

Jessops have burnt a few bridges with Canon UK. if they survive i would be shocked ! Jacobs are a funny bunch. But its where i would buy new camera stuff from if required. But i prefer the S/h market and "Museum Street" caters for all my needs

Ahem - Whittards who I mentioned yesterday as going under, have announced today that they are indeed going under.

Flipping 'eck, I shall call myself Matt Peston from now on!
