Buying expensive watch on line?

I'm thinking of treating myself to a Tag Heur watch (its my 30th at the end of this month ).
High street places such as Goldsmiths have it for £1,595 (ish) but looking on line I could get it for around £1,300, eg CAF2110.BA0809 - TAG Heuer Watches From Swiss Watches Direct Specialising In TAG Heuer, Omega & Breitling Watches
For all of you out there with expensive watches, have any of you ever purchased from such places or do you stick with the high street stores?
Cheers

Walk into Goldsmiths, tell them what you want and are prepared to buy today. Say you can get it online cheaper but would rather deal face to face, if the price is right.
You should be able to negotiate a decent discount on all but the most desirable (in terms of demand/supply) watches. If they have one (or more) in the store, its not "in demand" and you should get at least 10% off if not significantly more.
Or, as above, phone around and get best price first, but nothing beats being there in person with credit card out.
I got 10% of my wife's watch a while back just by asking "how about a discount?" - and that was before economic downturn.

Anyone looking for a decent discount on gents steel sports Rolex is going to be sorely disappointed I feel. Some piece of battery powered badge engineered tat from TAG should see you with a hefty discount however.

I'd put it on the c/c personally, you have better protection in case the watch turns out to be defective. It might even be worth getting a new card with an introductory cashback offer if they're still available.

Still worth it for 1.5% of a sizeable sum.

Or better yet, negotiate the discount, get the credit card out then enquire if they'll split the 3% c/c fee with you were you to pay by debit card/cash.

Now a nice vintage Heuer on the other hand...............

They won't lose 50 percent of their value the moment you leave the shop either.

Yes, a nice old Heuer would be a far better purchase. You might even buy two for £1,600. The dials dont seem to last very well though, unfortunately.

For £1,500 I think that Id look out for a nice used Submariner date. Add a little for a service and you have an awful lot more watch for the money; and I say that as someone who owns an old mechanical TAG-Heuer.

Tarka is correct but if he can find a Sub date for 1500 quid* then I'll eat my deerstalker. More like 2-2250.

I have to admit that their user profile and 'type' is very different now to when I bought one in 1991. As it was the first proper watch that I bought, I still have a soft spot for my 4000, but I prefer vinatge Omegas now (over 'better' watches too).

It isn't so much the fact they seem to appeal to clueless mugs these days as the fact that the brand has been devalued by the number of poor and tasteless products they produce.
There are actually some interesting watches made by TAG even today, the Calibre 36 being one.
However the proliferation of cheapo quartz models which look and feel even nastier than they are, the management/ethos of the brand and the profile of their clients is a huge turn off for most people in the know.

As has already been said ... walk into Goldsmiths (preferably towards the end of the month when they're nearing target 'deadline') and ask for their best price ... then negotiate a bit more off for buying it there and then. I got over 15% off my Seamaster Planet Ocean doing just this in Goldsmiths - in the Oracle, Reading. Never thought to negotiate in a 'high street' shop before, and suggested a price more as a flippant remark ... needless to say I was surprised at how willing they were to discount.
Also already mentioned, but just got my Tag Ti5 back from a service, 8 week wait and £150 lighter in the pocket.
Enjoy your present, my SPO was a 30th birthday present to myself

Yea thats a good point, I know on the Tag web site they list their authorised retailers but not sure about if buying on line is mentioned or not, I will take a look.
The thing is with haggling, in my local town (Ipswich), there are only a few shops that sell "expensive" watches and they all seem to be prices the same so I haven't really got much to haggle with, could be worth a try though

Or, you could drive to Great Yarmouth, and visit the excellent *** and Sons who also have a good range.

I've got one of these
The list price is £3400 but i've seen these used knocking about for £2250. Cracking watch, and the difference in quality is worth the extra cash in my opinion
