Half four and its dark - why mess with the time?
wasn't it triggered by some scotish island kids being killed on the way to school, which according the a Radio 2 investigation a few weeks ago never actually happened?

It might make sense if we all got up at 4am and went to bed at 8pm; that would give us a period of 8 hours either side of when the sun is at its peak, which might be considered 'correct' in some technical sense.
Personally I couldn't care less about mornings - I'm usually half asleep until about 9.30 anyway - but really miss getting to see the sun when I leave the office around 5.30pm. In fact my evenings are pretty much a write-off until the clocks go forward again in the spring

I don't know about that. But without looking into it, the argument I think is that less children would be killed as motorists are less aware first thing in the morning and more likely to have an accident or not notice things. They reckon something like 40-50 kids would be saved each year. Whether that's true or not I have no idea, but it would be better, IMHO, to have lighter evenings than mornings.
