just how light is a saxo then?
and do you reckon this turbo'd saxo could outrun a scooby down the lanes?

We are talking about Driven, who will have stock cars. Not a 5000 bhp Saxo hot rod with 20 turbo chargers and furry dice!

I guess it'll be watch this space, or rather Channel4's!!!

Cool

Lighten up guys, if we're all so sure of the abilities of the Scoobs over a Saxo, why so worked up?

Ok so it's maybe not a great group test, but it's not the first time they've had strange comparisons. Maybe the producer's been on here and seen some of the complaints about Saxos trying it on, and wants to settle it once and for all.

If you don't like it, turn over to Eastenders, or whatever.

Mike.

In response to Ian about the Saxo with a blower, youre talking of a highly modified Saxo against an off the shelf UK WRX, shall we put it up against the reasonably modded STi7 and see what happens then.
You cant compare a sh*troen VTS or not, against even a standard WRX
let alone against an STI.

Thumbs up

carl you forgot about practicality

Performance: Saxo 17/20, Evo/Scoob: 19/20
Value for money: Saxo 20/20, Evo/Scoob: 17/20
Practicality : Saxo 15/20, Evo/Scoob: 17/20
TOTAL: Saxo 52/60, Evo/Scoob: 53/60.

Tides turning

Ian - don't doubt the abilities of the Max'd Powered Saxo, but aren't we talking about going to your local dealer and buying an off the shelf motor. If we are gonna start comparing modified cars then are we really still talking about a Saxo. Perhaps the Scooby and Evo might want to bolt on a few more bits and pieces to make it interesting.
You'll be telling me next that the Hyundai Accent is also faster than the standard Scoob - well of course it is when you've spent £300,000 on it and strapped Alaisdair Mcrae into the cockpit.

PS - I'll look out for the Max'd Saxo when I'm passing the local shopping parade at midnight where the rest of the MP crew hang out.

Oops !

I wasn't wishing to start a war - just saying that a saxo with a blower would make a pretty quick car. There is no chance a std. Saxo could nail a std. scooby.

The reason I know a little about saxos is that I've recently got my son a White Pug 106 rallye. So far his mods are as follows:

Custom exhaust manifold
Custom centre pipe
Magnex Back box
K&N Induction kit
White Compomotive MO Motorsport 15" wheels.

The car is white an looks lovely. We are all petrol heads at heart - he is just as passionate about cars as we are - all be it with a slightly smaller budget to play with.

I started looking at supercharger kits for when we eventually blow it up. We found some very interesting stuff about turbocharger kits too. The company does kits with and without IC/Chargecoolers - very impressive. Now a garret T2/3 hybrid running 17psi on a car that weighs in at approx 890 kilos would be loads of fun

Sorry Ian - looks like I might have done a Yank - and sent a bit of friendly fire over your way. Not a good move, especially as your a Derby Scoob too.
Look out and wave if you see a std(ish) Silver 99 UK.

My 15pence worth:

0-60 Top speed Driven wheels

Scoob 5.4 144 4WD

Saxo 7.6 127 FWD

Shall we start going into suspension? Brakes? etc....

You may as well compare the Scoob against ferraris etc.

Carlos, if you want defensive, go to the EVO board.

Mention EVOs sound characterless and see what happens

Practicality he Saxo wins - is a hatchback you see

Betcha money, if theres a slalom, Saxo wins - by a fair bit too I'd guess.

Can't see the problem. But then I'm living proof, having owned 3 Imprezas, two purchased brand new. I now own a 205 GTi. Not by circumstances. But by choice. I am a happier man, and a wealthier one as well.

So before everyone Scooby owner guffaws, maybe Channel 4 are onto something?

The comparison doesn't exist but as a previous Vts owner i'll tell you...don't undervalue it!(not in this contest but in general)

I saw some interesting conversions for a Saxo VTS see http://www.motorsport22.freeserve.co.uk/.

Bearing in mind how cheap a car it is to buy then I can see some value in buying one, modding it and watching it fly!! I think some Scoob owners get too defensive about their vehicles......this elitist attitude really makes me cringe especially as it all boils down to money. I mean a Subaru may be an excellent car but then so is a McClaren F1. Not everyone has £20k to spend on a car but nevertheless they all enjoy their cars and surely thats what it is all about..? enjoying your own car!! not getting ****ty about other ones! People on here moan about the MaxPower brigade, then it turns out they own a modified scoob with 350+ bhp and an exhaust the size of the euro tunnel!!! lol...I am not part of the MaxPower brigade but I think there is too much motor snobbery around and its about time some people stopped being so '****' and bitchy and tried to lighten up a bit!!

Looks like the programme makers have generated a lot of interest so full marks to them. Obviously in the need for good TV the Citroen will do extremely well , better value for money etc but who cares. Who wants to go back to TV motoring programmes where they spent time counting the number of cup holders or critisising the way the stitching on the leather steering wheel is anoying.
The clip I saw was off road, if they run this in the prog try & check out the tyres, my STI is useless on grass as road tyres + BHP = loads of fun but little rapid progress.

Cool

Well I can see the point of this test -

Saxo is £11k
WRX is £21k
Evo is £31k

So what do you get for your extra £££?

In the real world there is probably less between the WRX and Saxo than most of us think...

Saxo Versus Impreza.... what a load of nonsense this is.

I've had a VTS for two years now and i was really impressed with the 'little' car. It handles good and has a nice lump up front but there's no way it can keep up with a scooby.

In just 10 days time, my VTS is being part-ex for a Scooby (can't wait). The scooby is leagues ahead of the VTS, i've thrashed the VTS to it's limits. I took the Scooby for another test drive yesterday and pushed it just like the VTS and it really *scared* the pants off me. Anybody attempting to compare these cars together are nuts, what type of journalism is that!

HAHAHAHA , the producers have the entire petrol head community in theor grasp and are destined to top their personal best in the ratings with this one.

Almost seems as if they intended it this way

If Every one keeps putting forward points why the saxo should win the test, they why do we give our hard earned cash to subaru and not citroen. I moved from a vts 6 months back to a my01, performance wise I think it may shock some people to find a £11 french bath tub keeping up. I think the saxo is the best selling hot hatch for the last 2 years running which must prove somthing, (free insurance and cheep finance maybe).

I doubt the saxo should win for practicality as anything more than size 3 feet and you brake and accelerate at the same time!!!! Also has the MOST uncomfortable seats ever made. But the handling is much closer to a scoob than its given credit for! In the dry i doubt theres too much in it.

Drivel, sorry Driven, can't go along with Top Gear's choice so the Scooby will flunk it (it is the STI if the rear view of the car in the clip was the one they will use). You can't fit a rugby team and all their kit into an Evo so it will flunk it. The extra cup holder in the Saxo really impressed, and it was the choice of the old geezers dragged from the post office pension queue, so it wins the day.

Give me Top Gear GTI any day - loads of VBH and Steve B is a good northern lad with wit. The reviews ain't bad either. Penny in vinyl can't compete.

The Saxo might well win, because under usual driving conditions it's as good as the Scooby/Evo. We are told how good these latter cars are at cornering, whilst being thrown sideways around airfields, with 50m run-offs to use their active yaw/limited slip diffs, standing starts prove there accelerative powers, 7000rpm and drop the clutch I don't think, ridiculous slalam tests prove there ability to change tack, as long as Eddie Stobarts not coming the other way.

I recently had a new shape MR2 up my a**s all the way home, and could not shake him, OK I'm a crap driver but I suspect he was also. The point being it was real world driving on real world roads, and I'm beginning to think that there are alot of other cars out there that just as good and more to the point alot less hassle/money to run.
