the two trains of thought , Lou are either to protect ( usually for softer skinned Westerners ) or the old school way of the Temple akin to punching buckets of sand etc to harden the hands.

ScoobLou - I KNOW you are a girl!
I just don't wrap my hands - use bag gloves for training and "proper" gloves for competing without wrapping them.
I also often train on my heavy (30kg) bag without any gloves, just for discipline. In fact in karate (which I did for about 5 years) I used to punch a "makiwara" 100s of times a day to toughen up the knuckles.
Unless you plan never to actually use your martial art, wrapped hands and gloves can instill bad discipline - get into real trouble and you're likely to have a poor fist shape and bend your wrists ruining all that good work.
Oh and don't worry - I punch and kick plenty hard enough. Flippin well should do after many years of training.

I trust my instructor due to what he has achieved in his career so if he says to wrap them, then wrap them I shall
I just want to tone up my body and feel more confident in myself
Hope this clears things up and I hope I never meet you down a dark alley

Lou - wrap them then and avoid hurting your hands (I've hurt mine plenty of times).
I'm just from a cro magnon school of martial arts and exercise/fitness- it sometimes hurts but that's part of it. Especially when a spinning hook kick catches you in the temple (DOH DOH DOH!!) and knocks you out cold. And when you get major concussion half an hour after a competition. And busted ribs, nose, etc, etc.
And when I managed to get new students to throw up when I took the circuits part of the lessons...

Whilst not like some of the more experienced people on here i did TKD for 4 years and i cannot remember anyone having wraps.
Doing press ups on my knuckles on a rock hard floor in a unheated Dojang on a February evening will live with me forever.
It was hard but that was the point, it aint easy.

We can't have our legs out straight, find them really hard as it doesn't feel natural the way we have to do them.

Not saying I'm some hardman ninja - just aware that training involves a bit of pain. Be it martial arts, running, cycling, whatever.
Dan - how is CGTi then?!!
