Worth asking; if you don't ask you don't get! Try a similar query for your local area...

Nice one dude.....
If a we all did that, there be everywhere.
Was wondering, does E85 make our decated scoobs more MOT friendly?

With a completely standard car (MY 05 STI EUDM), if I run Maxol E5 which is a 5% mix and 98/99 octane the car runs great, if i run that for a full tank, then fill with RON 95 and try and boot it straight away, the car goes into limp mode,
Huge det spikes from the lack of octane causes the ECu to pull loads of timing and if bad enough will put it into limp mode because the advance multiplier has dropped down very low.

What sort of learning does the ECU do?
In simple terms.. there are lots of ways that the ecu tries to protect the engine. If it hears det it will remove timing and add fuel. If it hears it regularly in a certain rpm/load cell range then it may learn to keep timing low there but gradually try and add timing back in til it reaches the point where it is happy. This might be all the way back to full ignition advance or somewhere slightly lower if it still sees some det. It does this continually - always trying to get to the most efficient/safest scenario (with varying degrees of success) It may also choose to globally reduce the timing advance and run on the high det fuel map if it perceives the problem is bad enough.

Probably but check with your mapper (if the car has been mapped) - I would go with slightly less than 5L to be safe though.

Ok thanks. Car has been mapped, but only very mildly as no mods on car.
4psi peak boost increase and maybe some timing tweaks to suit that, but low to mid is un touched pretty much, car just pulls a bit harder at 5-6800, then tails off like it did when completely standard.

From what I gathered it makes similar power as meth I was only planning to use it as its more envoiramentely friendly than meth also safer to have laying around. I think ill just stick to meth until morrisons or shell start supplying around me.

I emailed Shell and they said they had no plans to introduce 100% E85, but they are adding bioethanol to all their fuels, 5% or so.

So its costing more in the long run, but its quite cheap in terms of power increase thats whats your saying. so its kinda a compromise if your willing to pay a tad more to run your impreza!

i think its still got to be worth a shot. even at 10 or 20%

Yes.

20% mix costs virtually nothing as an octane booster (which in effect is what it is doing) and in my case gave around 10% extra power. I have mapped this mix on a few cars now and it has a similar impact on performance at more std modification levels than mine is.

I've been following this thread for a while, and would love to know if a few litres of bio in with a tank of super would lower emissions enough to get past the mot test?

Also a bit off topic i know, but i see on 22b that Zen have sold their Time attack car running bio ethanol.

45k !

Is that still rumoured Duncan? Outlook for E85 doesn't look good at moment with the 20p tax subsidy due to be axed (Nov pre-budget report) and Morrisons pulling B30 (biodiesel) from the forecourts:

If biofuels go, should we mourn them? | Environment | The Guardian

Had no reply to my Morrisons Cambourne query (except an acknowledgement 'your corresponsence is important to us...') so have given them another nudge before trying the phone.

yeah saw that subsidy getting slashed - another increase grrr.

Shell are def going to be going down the bioethanol route but it appears to be using as an octane booster like Tescos - I can live in hope though.

will shell be modifying the vpower to include e85? or is it going to be doing its own run of e85?

VPower will effectively be E5, if it isn't already.

That's the way I'm thinking of going TBH, just haven't really got the space to store a 200l drum, using it as a table didn't amuse the mrs

It was very useful having Morrison's just up the road to use it straight from the pump! With Tesco less than a mile away it was very easy to fill up! Damn Morrison's !!

I bought it in 25l containers before I bit the bullet and bought a 200l barrel - They're easier to store and, in my opinon, easier to pour.
