Think GM stills owns half of GMAC?
There,s your answer.

The profitable arm or the business, (credit) will be retained, whilst the non profitable part of the business manufacturing would be sold.

Look at

Rover, profitable partnership with Honda, not so good with BMW..a national industry bailed out short term by HMG then sold.

Daewoo, backing from one of the biggest shipping companies in the world went bust.

Landrover bought by Ford along with Jag Volvo & AM to become PAG, broken up to pay Ford's spiraling debts.

As of 2007 GM owned or part owns:

Chevrolet
GMC
Cadillac
Buick
Saab
Pontiac
Hummer
Saturn
Opel
Holden
Vauxhall
GM Daewoo

For the last 5 years they have been running at a loss

last year it was $38,732 (in million dollars)

No gov or bank can sustain that level of loss, even if everyone bought a GM next year, and thats assuming we had the money to do so, at best all they could do would be to break even.

What would they do the year after that?

my feelings....

looking at the above list..

Opel / Vauxhall
One or the other would go or the brand would be commonised.

Holden
Could be pushed in with V/O or bought by one of the global oem's.

Hummer
May survive given its military link.

GM Daewoo, unlikley to survive, would probably be absorbed by Chevrolet.

Saab
potentially could survive alone, the trollhatten bunch, have a dedicated following, and have produced some very good although quirky cars over the years.

As for the rest,
they may well survive, but at best they would be a shadow of there former selves, or would become owned by other companies, with just the names being retained.

Either way, GM is not going to come out of this one unscathed

Well currently GM are still collecting my payments for my car

I doubt that after my 3 years and i give it back it will help there situation much {lol}

In the ned I think there will only be a couple of main car players all the others will be subsideries.

As far as bailing out GM or Ford goes I doubt the US government can afford not too as the implications on other areas, supplies etc would be so crippling their own econamy would be finishes the amount of people tied into these businesses is imense.

It'll be the banks all over again.
