Picking up a car without tax
The DVLA will then offer an out of court 'fine' of £80, or , if it's an ANPR op the fine will be issued on the spot. I do believe that fine may have gone up recently by quite a bit too. They can also take the car off you in certain circumastances.
You will then have to pay the back tax on top of the fine. DVLA are mercenary and there's always extra to pay on top. I used to give people the benefit of the doubt if they were insured and the tax was 'only just' out of date.

I bought a car 3 weeks ago, garage got new MOT and tax disc for me in the afternoon and stuck it in the car. Insurance changed over so all was kosher. Driving home got pulled over by an ANPR equipped vehicle. They told me the car was shown as not taxed.
Seeing is believing I told them directing them to to the front windscreen. Ah they said the DVLA computer has not yet updated.
How we all stood round pi$$ing ourselves laughing at this one... not.
Happily I was shortly on my way.
Advice .. probably wouldn't risk it, 6 points is a lot
