Picking up a car without tax
I need to pick up a car, which is declared sorn. I have insured it but don;t have the logbook until i pick it up an pay for it. I can only pick it up at night and am hoping to go this evening.
What's my position with driving it 80m home with no tax? I can't really work out a solution to get it taxed.

no tax = no insurance, simple as that.
Either delay "pick up" till tomorrow night and post the cover note to the guy along with a cheque made payable to Post office for the road Tax and get him do it.
or
Borrow a flat bed lorry.
or
Go in the day and tax it yourself.

He doesn;t have it insured, so needs my cover note to tax it.. which i don;t have yet! And presuming he has chance to get to the post office for me.
FFS.. it's going to be next week before i can get it at this rate!
I rang the insurance company and they didn;t know whether i was insured without tax or not. This is turning into a right ballache!

Could you post him your covernote and get him to insure it? All he needs to do is fill in your details on the green slip with the V5 to match your insurance details to tax it.
It would mean an extra wait of a day but the other options are to risk the drive, or flat bed it home which would cost a fair bit.

As mentioned above, if you've insured it- and it has an MOT- you should be able to tax it online provided you have the document reference number from the V5 and the registration.
The MID updates pretty quickly- to see if its already showing as insured try ASKMID
The tax disc will, however, be sent to the registered owner (ie the sellers) address.
Hope this helps!

Well yeah. Its obviously wrong and you'll have to explain yourself come judgement day (or earlier if you get caught) but be careful, don't drive foolishly and make sure the car will make the journey.
You'll be very very unlucky to get caught. If you are caught your screwed.

If you've only just taken insurance out its touch and go if it would show up using the online system, as its happened to me before and had to go down the post office

So long as the policy is active it does not matter if the car is not taxed / MOTd, if you are p1ssed up, high on smack bla bla bla, you are covered to 3rd party level. However, if something did go wrong the ins co may try to recover costs.. but if you are happy to take the risk on this then so be it.
However, is SORN, so if you pass any ANPR police car you are going to be getting a pull and you are going to have some explaining to do... depending on who pulls you will depend how far you are going to have to bend over.. good luck!!

Ok.. i'm going to tax it online i think, then the tax will get posted to the seller, then he'll have to post it on to me.
So it will be taxed.. but i won;t have a disk for about a week.
Other than that it's go without tax tonight and get some in the morning.

You can drive the vehicle without an MOT to an MOT testing station where it has an appointment to be tested.
I had to drive my Jeep to the garage a couple of weeks ago and the girl wrote down the reg number just in case.

Very probably me: it was a common ruse used to drive unregistered cars from the docks. To use it in this case youd simply need to 'buy the car without an MOT certificate'. Not within the spirit of the law at all, but itd cover your ****, which is what matters.

The clause allowing you to drive to (and from) a pre-arranged MOT without tax is a handy one to use.
As long as you're insured and can prove you're going to/from said pre-arranged MOT with an appointment card you'd be fine.

You can print out the proof of purchase screen when you buy your tax disc.Armed with this and your other legal documentation, you wont have an issue.
If,you do ping the ANPR,you may well be stopped. You could obviously show proof of payment and that would be it.
The Police would only fill out a CLE 2/6 form(no tax/failing to display) and forward it to the DVLA for them to prosecute.
With the amont of decent ANPR hits that the Police get,it would be a very bored copper to spent more than 5 minutes chatting to you.
Apart from the tax,as long as the car and you is in order-dont worry

It's an offence not to display a valid tax disk, even if you have paid for it.
But, as you say - it would take an @rsehole of anyone to report you for it.

So long as you don't speed, and avoid motorway service stations, the chances of actually getting caught are practically nil. However if they do pull you over, all you will be required to do is pay any back tax owing from the date you purchased the vehicle, which since I imagine you intend taxinig it straight away does not affect you.
Obviously you need to make sure you get a bill of sale from the previous owner though.
All the above is as relayed to me by the girl on the desk at Macclesfield police station last month, I checked because my daughter had the same situation with her new motor.
Absolutely incorrect
Insurance companies cannot (although they will most definitely try) use the vehicles status with HMR&C as a reason to revoke cover
If you use a car with no MOT on the other hand (except for driving to a pre-booked test) your insurance company will not only revoke your cover, they will black mark you for every other company too

PS, with regard to the driving to a pre-booked MOT, there is apparently a mileage limit of 120 miles for the round trip.
