The system you refer to will only be available to 40% of homes and will cost £1.5billion. BT will only invest if Ofcom allows them to restructure and charge sufficiently to regain the costs. So far it isn't approved. Fibre into every house is estimated at £29 Billion.

I don't do pirate movies at all but the few supposed Hidef ones I've seen are not in the same league as Blu-Ray and the sound was compressed. Pure 1080P and 6 to 8 channels of lossless sound take up a massive amound of storage which is the reason for bluray's data capacity. A few standard def extra's with compressed stereo sound take up little space in comparison.

If you could do full hi-def for 7gig they'd do it on DVD.

Sony and all the other big players agree that Blu-Ray will be the last disc format. No money is being put into developing anything else.
The next format will be an online service but we are at least a decade or more away from that being a reality.

And although you get high def picture from appletv you don't get high def audio. Only highly compressed DD5.1.

I have both Blu ray and the now dead hd DVD I still think the hd DVD is a better picture.

Off topic anyone downloaded blu ray films titled ps3avcd off the newgroups . Stripped to fit a dvd9 only has dts not true hd but the video quality is the same. There's a forum with the links to the newsgroups quick google search

My dad bought a blu ray from richer sounds £150 samsung firmware can be upgraded too

I agree.

I have PS3, Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player and Toshiba EP-35 HD-DVD player.

HD-DVD does seem to offer a better picture although HD Audio is equal.
The Blu-Ray players are quicker and smoother though and I haven't had a single problem with Blu-Ray playback, can't say the same about HD-DVD.

downloads and proper DRM should hopefully, with a bit of luck, put all the pikey pirate downloaders out of action as well, and i am pretty sure that most people in the business would like this sooner rather then later, so will push it for all its worth......................


its not the cost of a £180 blueray player that bothers me, its all the usless discs that i would have paid for, that will be left gathering dust in a few years time when they stop selling them.

its a bit like all my old VHS cassettes, that i threw out

or audio tapes, or my vast collection of dj vinal that i gave away for free, seamed like a great idea at the time when i was collecting them all, not i just look back and think what a fooken waste LOL

yes i could have kept them and played them back, but who still has a vhs player under the tv nowadays? nobody keeps em, they just bin em.

i know its not perfect or anything, but if a film is available on xbox live at the moment that i want to see, i would rather download it (yes it may take a while, but come on, plan it in advance???) then watch it later on, and not have to deal with the box and disc getting added to my "collection"

the same collection that only ever has maybe 5% of the discs ever watched for a second time!

Found this article which has just appeared on a few of the AV and HC sites.

Blu-ray sales will triple in Europe in little over a year, despite the declining economy. That’s the finding of London-based analysts FutureSource. In a new report, the firm predicts that 1.8million BD players will ship into the UK and Europe by the close of 2009.
The figures, which do not include sales of the PlayStation 3, reflect what FutureSource believes will be a shift to a ‘stay-cation’ (rather than vacation) philosophy, as consumers pump money into living room entertainment.
Increasingly, it believes that flatpanel TVs, hi-def sources and software will be seen as better value propositions that holidays and dining out.
FutureSource director Sarah Carroll (pictured), reasons: ‘In times of economic hardship, we’ve seen consumer electronics and in-home entertainment weather the storm; indeed, expenditure in these segments can even increase. Sales of VCRs jumped by 440 per cent during the Eighties recession.’
A recent report from DisplaySearch can to a similar conclusion, estimating that sales of standalone BD players will eclipse the PS3 by 2010.
