Remember when I picked mine up (1.6). I bought it before I'd got insurance sorted so my dad had to drive it back for me, I'll never forget the smile on his face as he ars*holed it past me on the way home! Excellent cars! If only I hadn't sold it for £460 on ebay 3 years ago, ARGH!

Not really a fair comparison this,a scoob and a 205. Sure the pugs fun, handles well and fairly quick, but not in the same league as the scoob. A standard pug's 0-60 is 7.9,a good couple of seconds slower than a basic wrx. They are awful things to drive in the wet, sufer from bad torque steer, are a pain to work on etc etc etc...
BUT,for the money are fantastic, will give a lot of cars a run for their money and have a nice feel good factor to them.
I've had two 1.9's,a 1.6,a 1.9 309,and a Mi16 309,so i have had some good fun with them! But,theirs a reason i now have a scoob!

Agreed, would still have a Scoob over one any day, but thats because I have a thing for turbochargers

Saying that, if I could drop in a 200-220bhp turbo lump in this which wasn't too heavy I can't say I've experienced torque steer though, not from 130bhp anyways. In the wet, I have more confidence in my little 205 than the scoob ever brought me, and the Scoob had £800 worth of gas adjustable shocks, Eibach springs ans Whiteline d/links; where as the Pug has just got some second hand 400mm Spax springs. So thats the one point I would disagree on Mit

A pain to work on ??? never worked on anything easier in my life, maybe for someone with hands like cows **** it might be a bit of a pain (not saying that you have hands like cows **** nor attempt to wield a spanner whilst wearing boxing gloves). The engine bay of my 172 was the worst car i've worked on. Any person with arms bigger than a pipe cleaner would struggle just to change a headlamp bulb .

I have, was fairly straighforward tbh, most other things are a piece of p!ss to do, its a doddle to work on, lot of space in the engine bay etc, at least you don't have to plug it in to a computer so it can tell you its a bit poorly! lol!

As for torque steer - never experienced it from either 1.9 I've owned! You must have had a lemon!!

Comparing to changing and re-rigging a HLWSCU on a Tonka T3, or swapping the flap and slat motors, then re-wire locking the hyd unions with out removing the ECS pipes above the FSDU, thus saving on functional testing afterwards.

Ended up changing the cam belt but only because the water pump was knackered, thought may as well do the lot as a oner

I must admit,im probably forgeting what the standard pugs were like,as my later ones were tuned. You cant avoid torque, one short, one long drive shaft.
Lots of space? You have to lift one side of the engine to do the cambelt properly.

Are we talking about the same car here???

My Pug would do 60 in under 6 seconds, never suffered from torque steer at all, even running 200bhp through std driveshafts/gearbox, and at last Novembers very wet Oulton trackday I had no issues keeping up with any of the Scoobs there:

Video of Even More Scoobs - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting (Check speed diff between me and latter Scoobs)

Once it dried out the grip, handling and traction were out of this world on std road tyres!!

Everything is very easy to work on, I did most of my engine transplant with nothing more than a Halfords Pro toolkit!! Cambelt is easy job, gearbox swap easy, engine swap easy etc etc and thats with the Mi16 engine squashed in there - std 1.9 engine is a piece of **** to work on.

Were any of the scoobs turbo's?
That video doesn't really show anything,i was in front af an Enzo on the motorway the other day..
Really,my RA is worlds apart from the 180bhp pug i had,in every aspect.I never had 200bhp,so may make up the difference.
But thats just my opinion.....

well i picked the car up today drove the 102 miles there in the comfy merc in the p1ssing down rain all the way down the m6

anyways got there was absolutley poring down, the first thing i noticed was the dent in the bonet , it was masive looks like somone hit it with a sledge hammer ....twice , so it needs a new bonnet then i notice the gti badge is stuck on with liqid nails as was the rear veiw mirror wich is now on the pasingers seat there is a peice of red trim missing from the body kit panel ,i dident let any of this put me off as the car is 19 years old and to be honest the rest of the body is in very good order no dings , scratches, rust, i can replace all the above easly enuf, so was quite happy

the guy comes out and starts the car up, i notice the car wasent idleing very good and he says its ok when warm the exhaust is blowing a bit from the manifold.

i did ask the bloke if the car was a good driver / runner did it tick over fine, so wasent to happy about the little running gripes
so anyways i paid him the £625 for the car and off i went

i must admit the first 20 miles i thort the wheels were going to fall off , iv'e been driving a 05 bmw for the last 6 months and a new rangerover before that so iv'e been abit used to the comforts lets say :haha:
but once i got over the first 20 miles i started to feel at home turning into corners a little faster , roundabouts in third gear ,, oh yeah forgot about dad in the 50 mph merc so slowed down a little but was impresed with the ride and handling, it sits well on the motorway and the 19 year old seats are well comfy

to sum up it hasent let me down it is what i was thinking and is gona give me a lot of smiles per ££££

i am happy with my car for the money it go's in the garage tomorow to have the exhaust done and a helth check will let you know how that go's and will post some real pics of the car up soon

Paul, don't worry too much about the manifold. I assume it's the smaller cast iron jobby? They're prone to cracking and a bit of welding sorts them out. I'm looking for a cheap second hand 4-1 branch which cuts out the cast manifold and the mild steel d/pipe.

Rough idle could be the fueling. Does it bog down when setting off? Again mine did this and had a lumpy idle, ended up being the fuel/air mixture. M.o.t. found this to be running lean. A quick tweak by a decent mechanic on the lalan key screw near the Maf housing sorted this.

Cheap fixes for most things, just general annoyances. Mines lumpy when cold and coughs/splutters now, but thats because I have a cracked oil breather pipe which I have sourced a cheap one for. Sucking air in causes these types of problems. If I were you, just check all the hoses, again after a few years they're prone to cracking, so you could be sucking unwanted air into your system mate.

I'm by no means a mechanic (opposite infact), but it's amazing how simple things you can change yourself. With a mates air gun and spring compressors, I took off the struts and swaped my front springs over a couple of days ago. This with my limp wrist and a couple of extra hands

205 website is soo helpful too.

The manifold as cob said is common, chances are it's the branch on it's own thats cracked. I had mine welded, but cracked soon after.Cast iron's hard stuff to weld well. I ended up paying £150 for a new one from a dealer.
The idle could also be the idle screw on the throttle body,it has a tapered seat, and gets gummed up.Wind it out, clean and put it back in.
Theres also a suplametory air device which can cause problems,it has a couple of hoses on it and a connector, give it a check/clean. Lastley, and this made a good improvment,i had my injectors ultrsonically cleaned, much better after!

Hmm, injectors, didn't think of that. Will give mine a look over.

Re. the manifold again, if it is all cracked and really needs replacing, you have two choices (or what I would do)...

1. Scour a cheap second hand one off Ebay (cast iron one)
2. Buy a second hand/new 4 branch manifold and enjoy the power gains

I'm looking into the latter.
