If you were a true northerner, you'd still be in shorts and t-shirt

Don't worry about his comments on filler loops etc, you've probably got a header tank and so it will top itself up (his instructions refer to combis), just bleed the rads.

Had a wood fire the other night, but heating is still off, windows are still open and night and still using the summer duvet.

Misses is in the spare room with 4 jumpers, 3 duvets, heated blanket, fan heater and firmly closed windows

Tried doing that and only a tiny bit of air comes out, so I assume they are full of water - but the condition of the water... I dunno

Think I needs some of them twin thickness radiators, or indeed a modern heating system. I've got a dial near my stairs which goes upto 30 so I assume thats the thermostat, but when it's on full whack the house is still freezing, and costs me £20 a week bloody gas

Sounds like it may be worth flushing the system out in case their is any crap in the rads and pipes. If you don't know what to do, it may be worth calling a plumber.

Sounds like it will. I'll add it to the list of things I can't afford - like gas

Thanks anyways.

I'm a gas fitter by trade and run my own company AMBER MS HEATING AND PLUMBING ,Dont go to the expense of flushing an open vented system as it will cause as many probs as you have now. The three tanks in your loft are heating header tank, cold water draw tank for the cylinder and your cylinder, with has a primarey flow and return run by a zone port valve.Firstly make sure all of your rad valves are open and not closed down. Then check if your heating/hot water zone valve is not locked off, if so open it manually. Youll know if your rads are full of sludge because as i said in my previous reply you'll have cold spots on the rads as well as warm spots,You can lock down you TRV and lockshield take the rad off and flush it with a hose pipe, you can do this to all your rads if moneys spending is not an option, its also a safer but time consuming option. Recconect your rads once clear and then connect a hose pipe to your radiator drain **** which is connected to the cold water mains and another hose to another rad drain **** to drain off, so one hose is filling the system another is draing it, in-out. Make sure that the small tank in the loft is plugged off with a cone shapped rubber bung (where it draws water into the heating system) and run it untill the water is clear. But you only need to do it if your rads are blocked. Or just pm me your number and i'll call you. You must have a programmer that lets you swich to heating only, hot water only or both. To be honest with your type of open vented conventional system it can be a whole host of horrors, thats why people switch to combi's.

Again thanks for the insight, but those who have met me will vouch I'm an unlucky sod, so I would rather have someone else find those horrors and have the tools to fix them before I'm responsible for bringing sealife into Scunny via a direct flood link

If anyone lives close enough I'll do them a free commission to sort my heating out

You're confusing being skint, a northerner and a skint northerner .

Got it on low tonight - but wearing a t-shirt.

How do you tough lot cope in a cold bathroom in the morning? I can't stand the bathroom to be cold and if it's any less than 22 degrees it kills me

We've just bought a wireless roomstat (we had one in our old house and it was fab) and I'll be putting it in the bathroom overnight to make sure it's toasty in there in the morning The trouble with my house is that a DIY bodger used to live here and put a new roomstat in the lounge near the wood burner so as soon as that is lit the heating goes off everywhere else

At least with the wireless roomstat I can carry it around with me everywhere to ensure the right level of heat is maintained wherever I am The only room I like cold is the bedroom and that has to be very cold when I'm in bed, window open and 4.5 tog duvet on all year round although I like it warm when I first get into bed.

Am I too fussy? Oh and a handy hint for all you people who have a constant battle with the other half and room temps, do as I do and don't show them how the heating works. Bob has no idea how to turn the roomstat up or down

Not doing it at the minute but I usually put the heating on for an hour in the morning before I wake up so the bathroom is nice and warm and the towel on the radiator is warm for me it goes off about the same time I leave for work

I concede it was cold this morning.

I think today will go down as the real day the heating should have gone on for the first time.

Brrrrrrrr

I had to have it on last night. Was jetwashing the drive and let myself get a bit too cold.

I now realised that none of the TRVs in my house work properly. So looks like the next job is order a load of them, and replace a few old rads whilst I'm at it.

Tip for DIY plumbers: always flush a new radiator before fitting. You won't belive the crud that sometimes comes out of a new one (especially towel rads), let alone an old one.

I refuse to have heating in the bathroom. I just make sure I'm in there before the missus then have a good ol' letch!

I love cold mornings.

And before you lot start, yes, it is useless without pics.
And no, I'm not putting any up!

It's funny isn't it? Wimmins tend to look better in the cold but men just look, well, less well equipped
