With all that torque though, 4wd cannot be beaten in our uk rain drenched climate, and bmw don't do that!!!!

bmw = traction control = power off = or switch off = no traction = tail all over the place
LOL

Modern beemers have switchable traction control/stability programmes.

I had a 120D for a while (west coast of Scotland) and it was fine with everything on, or DSC engaged - which gives you a some slip, and was just huge fun with everything off. It even coped well in the slush and snow (which surprised me).

Of course it would never have the traction of 4WD. The OP did not specify thay the Audi choice would be Quattro however.

Not that I would ever choose a "non RS" A4 in any event, quattro or not, over something from Munich or Stuttgart.

I'd be bothered about boot space more.Presumeably thats why estates are on offer?

I was very disappointed looking at how little space there seemed to be in the A4's boot.Don't know about the BMW.

I suppose I wouldn't really care either way. Both nice cars and the reality is there is a nats whiskers differnce in performance in all these diesels. From a golf to a skoda to a merc.

In fact I don't know what reps do now that no one can out run anyone anymore

bmw do 4wd in the form of the x5 etc, and there's talk of a 4wd 5 series coming

traction pretty good with big tyres on the rear

Can't comment much on the BMW diesels. But I have been hooning a 2.0Tdi 140 A4 avant (2wd) about and not been impressed by the MPG, which is hovering round the the mid-high 30's (38ish MPG, mixed city/motorway). And thats without hammering it (max speed 80mph on motorways, and pottering in 6th gear, keeping below 2000rpm as much as I can in the city). I've tried slowing down and keeping to constant speeds, but it doesn't improve it by much. Eitherway, can't get near the high 40's its supposed to do.

I should drive it like I stole for a week to see how bad it could get!

Reports suggest the 320's fuel consumption is supposed to be very good, so maybe something to bear in mind if you have to pay for the fuel.

Also, I think it is a bit laggy IMHO sub 2500rpm, (although, compared to an Impreza, its none existant ) but its better than the old 1.9 which was more "nothing, big surge, nothing again".

Stinks as well. I know I shouldn't inhale exhaust fumes , but its does seem to smell worse than the average diesel.

Audi all day long, if my old A4 was anything to go by. BMW could make the best car in the world and I still wouldn't own one

Thank you - someone that has experienced exactly what I mean and have said about Audi diesels !

do you work for bmw?

but seriously, does price not come into this at all? i bought my A4 for 22k,for the same spec in a 320d age miles etc i was looking at 26 and a bit.

to me both drive well and do most things fairly evenly.the a4 might even hold a little higher % resale value.it has the best interior without doubt and is to my eye more discreet looking.

i have two good friends who drive bm's and both mates seem to spend most of their time in courtesy cars with the latest problem being the car's steering being dangerous which the driver who called to collect it noticed.he was taking the car back to have faulty door handles replaced for the second time.

now i know Audi's give trouble as well but i hate to hear bmw drivers trying to ram down your throat that they have a superior car when clearly they do have many problems

The original VAG 2.0TDi is course, noisy and has a narrow power band.

VAG knew they were way behind the competition and were forced to go with common rail.

The new conmmon rail 2.0TDi is a far better unit.

Cheers

Okay guys, time to report back.

Firstly, these were both 'used' cars. Secondly, I went for the BM. I've taken over from a (now ex-)colleague who at first had the Audi, he said it was 'ok, but the ecomony was poor'. He then changed to the Bm and never looked back.

So, it's a black 320D touring in SE spec. After the 320 mile return journey it managed 50mpg of mostly motorway driving. It's quiet and quite refined, the seats have plenty of adjustment to them so I'm comfortable on those longer journeys

I'm hoping to change it in about 6 months or so, so next question; should I try and get a 330D or something else?

A friend I work beside has a BMW 320d, 4 years old full service history, 36000miles.
Turbo went.
Bill to fix £2500. He went to a BMW specialist who told him it was a Very common problem with their diesels that BMW refuses to recall, but still cost him £1500.

Worth thinking about of it's a second-hand car.

I used to own an Audi A4 Avant 170 bhp which i had for about 10months and covered nearly 30k miles.(80% motorway). Having read a few of the earlier posts, i tend to agree with the laggy feel and very narrow power band. Fuel economy wasnt terrific, with it returning mid to high 30's, bearing in mind that the boot was nearly always loaded and i always had at least one passenger. Interior build was very good and the BOSE sound upgrade was well worth having!
I now drive a BMW 335d M sport and it is a truly stunning car. Performance to rival Many sportscars with sensible economy. It regularly will return high 30's to low 40's mpg with my style of driving. Interior quality is definately on a par with the Audi, with the seats being more superior. The car is effortless to drive and long journeys (300miles plus) are never a chore. (sometimes in the Audi, i would want to stop and have a break..)
I have had the BM for about 6 months now and covered about 15k miles, and wont be cosidering changing for many months to come as i dont think there is much out there that will better the overall package!
