Engine Oil
Sorry to hijack a little
I've been gearing up for an oil change and had pretty much the same questions in my head and now after reading this entire thread I'm unsure what to use.
Car is MY98 Type r.I know that it's running Millers 10/40 and done around 2k-2.5k since I brought it,a bit of 'spirited' driving but normal any other time.
Am i better off going for a slightly cheaper semi-synthetic and throw in an extra service with the saved money or stick with the millers and 1 less service a year.

It's entirely up to you, if you feel comfortable with either one, stick with it. You certainly aren't going in the wrong direction with your thoughts on the matter
I've read all the posts on this thread and it has left me with a question about the oil I'm using. I have the oil changed every 3000 miles and always warm up and warm down with the occasional foot down when driving. It's a MY99 more or less standard but approx 270bhp.
I've got 5w/40 Full Synthetic Valvolene but most posts seem to say that 10w/40 semi is the best to go for. Should I go for 10w/40 next time? Thanks

This thread is a mine of useless information
Daz is one of a few making sense here
I would suggest doing as I do and reading the Subaru owners manual.
For my STi a 5w-30 is recommended. Guess what!!! That's what I use
Works for me

Ditto, but I am thinking of going 5w-40 as I do the odd track day.
Just out of interest what oil do Subaru use. Is it the same for all Subaru's irrespective of age, mileage, power output?
What would they chuck in my car as it has full SSH?

More than interesting reading on this subject of oils for the subaru models.
My subaru main dealer uses castrol magnatec 10/40 semi synthetic oil for the sti models which they say is the correct oil for the car.
As mentioned before in a previous post castrol recommend fully synthetic castrol edge 10/60.
To be honest its all abit confusing to say the least.
I for one will be changing my oil on a regular basis (ie) every 3000 miles as she is not driven alot nor hard with no track days etc.
Alot of large performance companys quote different oils
Graham goode racing mobil 1 motorsport 15/50 fully synthetic
Roger Clark motorsport silkolene pro/r 10/50 fully synthetic
All seem to have different viscositys compared with what subaru themselves quote.
In the owners book it states 5/30 oil is prefererd but does mention 10/40 oil depending on climate and tempreture.
This is even more confusing as many have stated that a viscosity of 5w can cause problems and cause engine faliures.
All i all imo if dealers are selling 10/40 as part of there service schedule if something goes wrong the arrow can be pointed back to the dealer if they are suppling the wrong grade for you car.
I doubt if subaru would take a massive gamble on engine oils.
