Ok engine, gearbox and transfer box are all back in the car now.

Everything went together nice and easy today, I thought I would struggle to get the gearbox onto the engine on my own as last time it was a right pain in the you know what.

But I picked the gearbox up, walked up to the engine with it, and it litterally fell into place in about 30 seconds flat

The engine also went into place nice and easy, I didn't even get it caught on the driveshafts this time

Anyway once it was all in place and bolted up on the mounts, I had to go and pickup a new filter, some oil and get an allen key socket replaced as I snapped it when trying to remove an old main stud out of the side of the block (used it to put the strap on to lift the engine).

By time I got back it was dark, so I will crack on with it tomorrow.

Just gotta tighten the alternator up, refit the inlet manifold, turbo, downpipe, stick the rocker cover on, reconnect all the wiring, connect the oil cooler up, drop a set of plugs in, and fill the engine, gearbox and transfer box with oil.

Should have it up and running tomorrow

glad to see its coming along nice and easy mate , you should add that to you cv evo engine builder got enough exsperiance no ah mate .i bet you will need tyres befor your clutch .

Ok I had it up and running on tuesday afternoon.

I drove fine, but there was a loud rattle coming from somewhere.

Took it to my mates workshop yesterday morning, so he could have a listen.

We decided it was coming from 1 of the lash adjusters, so I removed them again and cleaned them out again.

Put it all back together and it was still the same

So we put it on the ramp and had another listen.

The sound was just as clear under the car as it was above, and sounded like it was inside the sump

So I removed the sump, removed the rod caps, and removed the crank cradle again to check all the bearings were ok.

All were fine, except for 1 rod bearing had minor scoring to it (not enough to cause the rattle that we could hear).

Luckily I had some spare bigend bearings, so today I replaced that and refitted the bottom end together.

Couldn't find anything else causing the rattle, so I put some fresh oil in it and fired it up again.

Still the same

So I removed the lash adjusters again, cleaned them out again, but this time I primed them with diesel.

Refitted, fired car up, and it was silent for about 10 mins, then the rattle came back, and went and came back and went etc etc.

So I am going to just run it about for a couple of days and see if it sorts itself out, if not then i'll just replace them (these are less than 200 miles old though).

Still main thing is, the engine is sorted.

Just need to replace a driveshaft seal tomorrow so I can start running it in propperly

jesus mate , doesnt sound like it's sorted to me just be carefull as to what scored the bearing as it might still be floating about .

I was just about to add that to my post ! Whatever scored the bearing could still be in there somewhere,unless it picked up on initial startup ?

I have a feeling (although I can't be certain) that I caught it when I fitted it.

The thing is, these bearings are soooo soft, you can score 1 with a finger nail if your not careful

Ok just to update this thread.

I replaced the driveshaft seals on friday, and had it up and running again friday afternoon.

The lash adjusters (tappits) were a bit noisey still, but I decided to drive it around over the weekend to see how it goes.

I tweaked the map a touch, just to lean it out a little (12.0 afr), and dropped a couple of degree's timing, just to keep it sweet (after all I am only running it in, not trying to make peak power with it yet).

Boost seems to peak anywhere between 1.4 and 2bar depending on which gear and at what RPM I load it at, but it never holds more than about 1.5bar so should be ok for now.

Anyway it all held together fine (even managed to keep oil in the engine ).

The only real problem I have found, is a coilpack seems to be breaking down under load, at peak boost in 4th it seems to splutter (blowing spark out, as it did this on the old engine, before I regapped the plugs to 0.5mm, however I am using new plugs and there already gapped to 0.5mm and I am running less boost).

Anyway I reached 200 miles in it today, so did an oil and filter change again, it is now running on semi-synthetic oil and the lash adjusters seem to have shut up, and it's running great (touch wood).

I then put a hard 20 miles or so on it, round a few of my favourite lanes, the car felt great, altho my AP's didn't seem that happy at the end of it, as smoke was pooring off them

Just another 780 miles to go, then I can put some propper oil in it, up the boost and map it for some power
