I wonder if anyone killed themselves over the fear of impending Bird Flu, aids, Ebola etc. which were other examples of press doom-mongering.

I don't know of any instances, but very possibly. What I do know is many, far too many, school children in England are becoming "depressed" because of all the fearmongering about climate change. I do know that in England, Al "I invented the internet" Gore's mocumentary is taught as fact in schools.

Scary propaganda, media/govn't etc.

I did misunderstand the real meaning of Einsteins statement, funnily that stemmed right back to when I was studying physics and my teacher led me to believe that the energy available depended on the speed as far as this formula is concerned when as I understand it now from FB, it is a statement of the total available energy available from a given mass. must have been the way the teacher said it! It is of course a far more logical result when you think about it. The actual speed in the accelerator influences the collision forces when they all meet in the middle naturally.

Now that I also understand how they produce the protons then I feel a bit happier about the initial experiments, but I will be sucking my teeth a bit when they graduate to larger hadrons which include neutrons.

I will be as interested as you Olly to see what they find of course.

I was meaning the nuclear energy released is not affected by the speed involved, but then I'm no physicist.
The energy available from a speeding proton is the sum of its kinetic energy (KE=1/2mv^2) and its 'mass' energy (E=mc^2), BUT its mass increases as its speed (v) gets closer to the speed of light, and in fact the mass approaches infinity if the speed ~ speed of light.

This is a consequence of special relativity, and you can find this stuff in most textbooks.

Hence you have a lot more energy available than just dropping them onto each other!

That is very interesting. Looks like the speed of light has a lot to answer for then.
