If you can stretch to £4k, how about an M-Class. Not great when new but excellent value as this price. Low ratio gearbox, separate chassis and short rear overhang are all good for towing. Dicovery tdi is agricultural by comparison.

Final bit of advice - visit Brightwells > Homepage. You can check the car's paperwork in the office beforehand, the cars are left running just before going trough the hall to check for faults and you can pay by debit card. I've bought 6 cars from there in the past and feel very comfortable with them, whereas I wouldn't buy from BCA.

Good job mine is a 3.0 then and not a 2.5 isnt it

One of the diff locks is only on the Shoguns and not the Pajeros, hence when they are breaking, they are much sought after

.
Do not go anywhere near an M class they are almost impossible to get rid of and worthless without command and family pack. I know dealers who won't even make offers to part ex petrol M classes and diesels are still over priced.

hmmm....
went to look at Discos, saw nothing but grotty rubbish, and bought a Mitsubishi Challenger. Thought it was a Pajero at first, but it's a bit prettier, and lookls longer. Based, on L200 pickup. same 2.8 TD engine, selectable 2/4wd and diff lock, fill electrics, tow pack, 100k, for £1600 (the day before it was going for auction). That's about half what they're up for on Ebay.
Might be a bugger to park though, it seriously long.

apparently it's the Shogun Sport in the UK

Sold my disco for £1150 1997 P 120k miles, twin suroofs, roof rails genuine tow bar, met red. Would have looked for £1500 had it not had a good number of rusty bits. Mechanically it was excellent.

Problem I have with the pricing is 'how much are they selling for' as the asking prices were all over the place. Actual sales seem patchy.

The disco had as many quirks as it had bonuses. It really is from a 'fix with big hammer' generation. House is brighter without it blocking the light though.
I'm going to get the fright of my life when the 400bhp saab gets rolling again....

the places I looked, selling at the cheaper end, were suprisingly busy given all the hype. I guess it's the top and where there's real trouble.

I may have to park the Challenger on the front lawn, which won't go down well...

Only issue wtih the Challenger/Sport is the very underpowered 2.5 diesel. Even the later models could only manage 114bhp and 172lbft

You may find you want to chip it as performance can be a little on the slow side when towing. Mitsubishi responded to the poor reviews by offering an in house power upgrade using a piggyback module. Aftermarket boxes are cheaper though.

Cheers

I happen to have a nice FSH monterey for £700 if you are interested. It has 1 year MOT 7 seats and proper History ie all the invoices to show what has been done not some bodged up stamp that tells you nothing.
