Only really been sideways twice.
Once being in my scoob on the local single track b-roads near my house at roughly 70, normally a safe enough speed a night (can see anything coming for miles), but hit some ice, AWD brought it back nicely though, just gave me a bit of a suprise.
Other incident involved a long wheel base merc sprinter van, pretty high sided. Come up a slight rise in the road and wham, wind picks the back end and spins it towards the nearside. Ended up completing a 270 spin backwards into a hedge on the other side of the road. God damn blizzard My mates only comment "There goes the damage deposit" (rental van) Got off lightly though, a bit stuck, but only broke an indicator lense, just froze my *** off flagging down a 4x4 who kindly pulled us out Went on my way and got the pool table we were fetching, needless to an interesting trip home as well...
Of course this happens just two weeks after I was passenger in a head on that wrote off both cars. Stupid council didn't grit the road and there were three crashes in 1/2 a mile of road before the ambulance got to us. So icy in fact I could barely stand on the road and the ambulance I tried to frantically waved at to slow down nearly ran into me and then the back of our crashed car.
Ah well, all good fun in the end

Can I have an award for the slowest car to go sideways?
Morris Ital 1.3 estate, my first car. Little did I know that one of the rear tyres had a kink in it and was worn down to the canvas on a 4" square patch...hit a wet 3 lane roundabout at, oh, all of 20mph and had a full oppo lock moment, luckily with nobody in the lanes next to me. Didn't manage that again in that car!

Sorry people, I've come in on this one a bit late. Yes had the Scoob sideways a couple of times on the public roads, but only on some of the nice big open corners on the Lanacashire country roads so no real danger.
Refro,
Is it any wonder that people looked scared when you were 'drifting' the Disco through corners. It's basically a tractor and having seen one 'fall over on its side' on the motorway when the stupid cow who was driving it attempted a last minute lane change I'd say anyone within 100 feet of you has every right to be scared. You would be too if you had half a brain.
Why does anyone who drives a Disco behave like a ********???
Regards,
tiggers.

A friend of mine bought a maestro from an auction thinking he would sell it on at a profit.
So there's 5 of us in the car going somewhere (can't remember where or why).
Anyway, in the middle of the back seat is crazy manchester bloke (friend of a friend). He's talking about never having been in a car when it's rolled? "Er..no...me neither", says I.
Mank reaches forward and pulls the handbrake up til it breaks (at this point we were doing 60mph on a major A road, fortunately empty at time).
Car goes completely sideways. Mate driving manages to counter steer, car snakes left 90 degrees, right 90 degrees, left right left right and finally straightens up and carrys on. Everyone in car has gone deadly silent including mank. Quite scarey.
Can only praise driver mate for excellent control due to lots of sideways practise in a beetle (his first car).
Don't trust them crazy manks!!!

Paulpalmer,
What XR4i have you got or did you have (Astraboy refers to it).
One of the old 2.8 V6 ones? I had one - was a great car for going sideways on the original 195 tyres, plenty of poke low down and souded nice as well. Even better with a LSD in as well!

first post, after reading this i thought i should comment...
i personally think scoobys are fantastic cars but unfortunately cannot afford one (work on steelworks hence use a **** car for work and cannot afford 900quid + servicing costs for a car that sits in the garage all year). so before christmas purchased a secondhand westfield megabusa for 14 1/2grand and 250quid insurance, which my local bike shop services.
anyway i'll cut to the chase, i'm fu&ked with it, any moisture in the air or on the road and i end up with the rear overtaking the front, i've only ever had front wheel drive cars hence why im struggling. anyone any tips????, never know how fast i'm going at the time since i'm to scared to take my eyes of the road (or the footpath depending on which way i'm facing!!!). so the answer to the origional question is yes i have been sideways on public roads, help on how not too would be much appreciated before i smash the damn think up.

megabusa,
I can't offer help on how to drive your car as the only time I have ever driven soemthing similar I was in the same boat. I did a very wet trackday and some idiot gave me a Caterham Superlight to drive. To this day I remmber my embarrassment at being utterly unable to drive the car at anything like speed round any corner. Thing is I bet if I knew what I was doing it would be awesome.

Had mine sideways more than a couple of times actually, usually due to my pushing it to hard, either turning to sharp or overdoing it at roundabouts. In the dry too. Last years snow was also used to it's full potential!
Sorry. Just edited to say I realise it is a really silly topic, but thought some of the stories might be a little more interesting than a lot of the recent boring topics. No offense to anyone.
