Got my iPhone 3G last week and I have to say it really does live up to the hype. Without doubt the best phone I've ever owned. It really is that good. Re the battery life on 3G - ALL phones on 3G have pretty poor battery life. 3G is terribly battery intensive and the performance of the iPhone is no better or worse than any other 3G phone I've come across (my old HTC MDA II and current Samsung i600 work phones are just as bad).
I think that because it is tied into an 'unlimited' data usage contract there is a tendency to use the feature more (this is the first time I've owned a phone that actually makes mobile surfing a pleasure and not a PITA) and therefore people are more ware of the battery being drained.

^^ ditto.
battery life is less than I was expecting, but rather than switching the computer on to surf while the misses watches eastenders I can just put the phone on and connect to the wireless router - its the wireless / 3g & screen that go with the battery.
great phone though.

Phone's OK, O2 is pants!
I'm thinking about getting an Iphone obviously on O2...
had a test run of the new 3g one in the o2 shop, looks very good... on the email side can you enter any ISP details or is it O2 email only?
Any good points / bad points about this phone, please write below. I dont want a phone thats gonna be useless in a month or so...
thanks

The iPhone is OK for a gimmick - the email interface is nice but there are so many things missing that you'd get on other cheaper phones like bluetooth, the inability to use your own music for ringtones, no MMS messaging, cannot forward sms messages and the coverage on O2 (both 3G and 2G) is appalling/non-existent where I work so I've written a letter of complaint to O2. According to the Ofcom website, O2 were fined earlier this year because they hadn't reached the percentage coverage that they were told to - O2s 3G coverage is the worst out of all the top 5 SPs. I'm hoping and praying that I can cancel my contract on the grounds that O2 coverage is non existent (I get 'No Service' on the iPhone at work! Phones are a very personal thing but always check for coverage as well and don't rely on the network provider maps - check out the maps on the Ofcom website as they are more accurate - according to O2 customer support, I should have good coverage at work - I get none! Go figure!

IMHO I think a better way for Media messaging is via email (that's free) rather than the 50p/message daylight robbery for the sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't and it's different for each operator MMS messaging system!? The amount of times i've received an MMS message and then had to fart about going to websites to collect the message because its from another provider etc.. or it simply just didnt work.
Bluetooth is available for headsets, car hands free devices/stereos etc. Yep it does lack bluetooth data transfer and bluetooth dialup networking which might proove a hinderence for some. However it has wifi data transfer which is far quicker, and more useful when it comes to linking with PC's/laptops etc to tranfer files. The Bluetooth DUN restriction (requested by the operators) is due to the potential for abuse that is likely to occur having laptops etc connected via the iphone and leeching the unlimited* bandwidth. The biggest miss as far as I'm concerned is the lack of A2DP Bluetooth music streaming... great with some car stereos!
Agree that not being able to directly forward SMS messages can be a bit of a bind, however just because it isnt there now doesnt mean it won't be in an update... not many phones get the kind of software updates like the iphone does.
That said, I have to agree the iphone 3G isn't perfect in many respects, but I do think the flexibility and the adaptability via the many apps available can make it an extremely useful device. Without these I would agree entirely with your 'gimmick' conclusion, but as it is I can't agree, and the advantages far outweigh the few negatives IMO.
As for O2 getting fined... this isn't true, they were threatened by Ofcom that they were in breech of the 3G licence because they hadn't achieved an 80% rollout and were given a deadline to have it completed by June.. or face a £40M fine. They covered their obligations in the nick of time. It is probably true however that their 3G coverage is probably the poorest of all the operators. But then saying that I've had no issues so far concerning coverage

I've been told that the new version will be out in January. It will have improved battery life and reception. I'm going to wait to see if it delivers on these promises and then consider buying one.

The trouble with 3G is its only the last couple of years (ie 2006) that its taken off in the uk, so for the first 4-5 years its been very stagnent, hence companies like orange and O2 have been unwilling to commit to upgrading on a large scale/short timetable, when 90% of their customers use 2/2.5g more.
Also as ive previously stated, 3G isnt readily available in rural area's, for ANY network, because it would cost too much to implement (smaller cell coverage area's etc), so if your in a rural area, unfortunately your a bit stuffed
Now no coverage can be reported to O2, though the postcode area needs to be given, and ensure your phone is not just switched onto UTMS, this wont help things, then if your in a building, the walls can reduce your phones range and decrease battery life (though on standby UTMS gives longer battery life but in talk time GSM or 2G is better!)
Network coverage for O2/voda/tmob/h3g and orange (though the big 3 probably scrape that little bit more) is about 97-98% of the country, only the most rural area's are not covered.

I have a number of personalised ring tones on my iPhone, you can download them or make them your self, if you look on YouTube there are videos to show you how, at the moment you can't as far as I know, personalise message tones

However since I'm 'docking' it daily to synch stuff (it charges via USB) I don't find it an issue really, I just generally do a full battery cycle on a monthly basis.
As said before not had any issues with reception personally..

had my 3g one a month now, its not so much what it does its how it does it, to flick through pics, surf the net, even texting is cool as it shows you all prev message conversations on screen as your replying.
some of the apps are brilliant, i currently got the vertual pool, shazaam, ifish is crap tho lol.
my only possible complaint is the silent button, im allways flicking it on whilst in my poscket etc
brilliant phone in my opinion

"Yeah but you can't do video conferencing!" who on earth wants to do video conferencing on a phone! I'd rather not look a complete plonker.
"Yeah, but you can't change the memory card" yeah, but I have 16gig built in, and when a 32gig model comes out I'll upgrade for free.
"Yeah, but you can't do MMS" I have never in my life sent an MMS, never will and I truly hope that everyone follows suit and kills this second rate service.
When I phone comes out that outclasses the iPhone I'll buy it. Nothing is even close right now.

Its great my 3GS - but I no longer get reception at my parents house after having reception there for 20yrs! Have to swop the SIM back to my Nokia N95 and then get 3 bars. Bit of a basic on a phone really...i.e getting reception! D
