just seen your post bonehead. As I mentioned above I have tried out Krav, and absolutely everything we did that day came from Wing Chun. Everything! Now obviously we dont cover the whole KM system in a day, but the section I saw was totally familiar. I sparred with the instructor at the end and it was fairly even because it was so familiar to me.

How much comes from each indivual art is a fairly fuitless debate and I fully accept it uses other techniques from other arts, but just get your instructor to watch some wing chun and they will see the commonality

Totally agree with that comment.

I also think that your instructor is as important as the system you're doing.
My guy used to be a bouncer on top of the fact he's studied lots of systems to very high standards. His day job's a university lecturer (sp) so he knows what he's talking about and structures the classes well.

When comparing different systems I alsways think about a quote I heard from Bruce Lee that went along the lines of saying that unless you've got an extra leg or an extra arm you're all doing roughly the same thing.
I read it that you should find something that works for you.

Well I've been down to watch a Jujutso class tonight, to see if it fits with what I want. I was impressed, the instructor seems a friendly guy and is keen to teach the basics and make sure you get them right before teahing you the more complex moves etc. He spent 10 minutes with me asking what it was that I wanted from the classes and then came back to me half-way through the session to see what I thought.

I'm going back on Thursday and next Tuesday to have a couple of free classes to see if I enjoy it.

And I'm well impressed that the pyjama-suit things that they wear are black. Ninja style

Good to hear your getting on well, it's the same style that billy doak teaches so you might bump into him at some point.

The suit is called a gi, but in aikido when you reach dan grade you can also wear that thing that looks like a skirt called a hakkima.

You only usually see instructors wear these though despite the grade as it's disrespectful otherwise.

Hope you have fun though that's the most important bit, i started to learn ma as i was curious about it and found myself taking it quite seriously towards the end even though that wasn't my intention.

The instructor tonight was simply wearing the black trousers, black belt and black t-shirt. Some of the class also wore the top, others t-shirts, some just wore tracksuit trousers and tshirts. There were two green belts, one orange and one yellow, no-one else had any belts. I have no idea what each level and colour is tbh.

hmm ok let me think.....

I think most of the orders are.

White/yellow/orange/red/green/blue/purple/brown possibly two then your black which is your dan grade.

But belts are unimportant imo as they don't really show the ability of the pupil it's only as a rough guide to their ability.

Ive sparred with brown belts and nailed them while lesser belts have bee harder to train against.

Tshirts is unusual but not unheard of but it's just the beginners that wear these until they get the proper equipment which isn't expensive anyway and if it is the club is ripping you off.

Say no more than £30 for trousers £60 for a top then £15-£30 for each belt/grading.

It is a rough price though.

I could see that the top provided more opportunities for gripping points whn you were putting a hold on the opponent. The instructor showed the difference between gripping your own elbow/arm/the opponents clothes etc to apply pressure to the grips. Also saw a couple of ways to get out of them too. I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

Sounds like a good instructor, same with ours he taught us different methonds of attack so you would have to change your attack or stance slightly or say grip their wrist/arm failing that go for their jumper or shirt.

I vote for the most widely used system of KnoKan-Do. Plus I based a lot of my experience loads of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies and just to mix it up a little, Fight Club too (but 1. I don't like to talk about it and 2. I don't like to talk about it!)

I personally dont like styles that require a "special" outfit. You train for one thing, then on the street find out that no-one is wearing a gi and so a lot of the moves are virtually impossible - you cant really get a good hold on a T-shirt! Make the training realistic IMHO

Drunken Kung-Fu as in most confrontation cases you'll be drunk in a bar!

Lol

Seriously though I would consider Wing Chun. Was training 12 years ago but gave up eventually due to having to work away. Lots of close combat using mainly upper body for attack/defence and lower body mainly defence (protecting your nuts etc).
It's based on what they call the "Centre Line" where you keep the centre of your body facing your apponent at all times. Lots of fancy forms to master in this too!

Just back from my first Jujustu class. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The studio we use was roasting when we arrived so it didn't take long to build up a sweat. We started off by jogging up and down the studio, then doing a combination of stretches which took me back to cross-country running at school! When they were out of the way we then started doing some rolls. I only had to do forward/over shoulder, backwards/over shoulder, and side-on rolls.

Everyone else with green belts and above were doing more complex stuff including summersault type rolls and the instructor had removed the crash mats on their side of the room.

After that we moved on to punching and kicks with pads. Some of my boxing knowledge reared it's head from years ago, and I was remembering to keep my guard up. After that we did a combination of blocks and counter-attacks without the pads, aiming high punches in to show blocks, aiming a high punch and then a quick low punch to the body to enable the defending combatant to block the high punch with the right arm, block the low punch with the left and then counter attack with a chop to the neck with the right arm.

I came away with a sweat and I think I'll feel a bit tender in the morning, but that simply means getting down the gym and buidling some upper body strength.

I must admit I really am looking forward to next week
