That's not true.

In a straight line, a standard Scoob has better acceleration/traction than an Exige.

In the twisties I'd gain on most Scoobs, but along the straights, they would disappear into the distance.

One Exige in particulary "H7TCH P" had troubles with misfires and a dodgy tyre, causing him to run even slower than the others (I lapped him 2x in a 30 minute session)

Those I passengered didn't think I was hanging around !

Even still, I prefer to remain within the limits of my car and my abilities while there are others around to consider

Thanks to Stef for organising it. Top day.

Cool

I can second Simons last comment, I remember a couple of times looking in the mirror, seeing a car miles back and by the time I got round the next corner looking again and finding them crawling all over my ****.

There were definitely some people out there that were just being obstructive however.

Ps Have I got the rules wrong ? I though if you were letting someone pass you, you indicate, pull to right and *ease off* ? I had 2 slower cars in particular continue to nail it as I don't have mega HP to get passed safely I didn't attempt it.

Red face

quote:
The trouble is, when you are going quickly (as you were), it is not easy to notice people gaining on you from way back. Where as for the guy behind, it is easy to see the gap closing up.

*cough*

Well, i am very carefull about checking for cars from behind, on the exit of every corner and before every braking point i check my mirrors religeously and i can't remember once seeing a car gaining, that is of course unless i was letting the car cool for one lap before entering the pits. Again something i do religeously. So youve lost me mate.

Not that it matters, i am more than happy for people to be quicker on track than me, it's just a giggle after all and not a race, but i honestly dont remember seeing anything on track come close??

As for the passing etiquet, you should indicate right, pull over and back off till the person is clear then pull back on line. Even with my power/weight advantage, above 100MPH i dont accelerate that much faster than a quick scooby because of the aerodynamics of my car beeing poor.

I nearly had a big accident due to someone not backing off in that situation, It's a good job i am experienced on track and know at what point someone simply isnt going to make the corner, because if i had turned in as normal, i would be 6' under now.

Thanks for the mention John . I think Andy had a top day! When I picked him up from the station, we went out of Derby on the A6 - nice open road with no traffic on it at 8:30 in the morning - his first time in a Turbo, so I put my foot down, just to show him the kick. The look on his face was priceless. When I told him this would probably be the slowest car he was in all day, he didn't believe me

Said it already, but it was a great day, just ******* cold!!

Cheers

Rob Mac is a great guy who let me out in the session with the Lotus's, I wasn't lapped by anything except by Johns heap . I passed all loads of Elises and an Exige but I don't think it was Davids, even some of the 2 seater Fugly cars like Johns were passed, shame about the lads in the RS Turbo who nearly killed me and a P1 nice lads though, hope they get the car fixed.

Yeah, Blow Dog - those stickers on your car must add at least 10mph to the top speed

V nice car all the same though.

We were having problems with it. smoking a bit cause of the spilt oil on the exhaust.

I would have thought you were understanding in that respect. Most of the other scooby lot were concerned, as we have all been there....

Shame that, i don't know you but i'm sure if you were having problems you wouldn't let it stop you....
We changed the oil, cambelt and thought we had sorted it......

But the again i guess you can't do it on yours......

dingy.....this sort of thing happens in these events.........
show some respect.

Thumbs up

Well what a cracking day.

It was the first time out for H1 PPY...and I'm please to bits with it.

I too was a strong believer that there was not a great deal of difference between UK and more powerful sti motors...I was completely wrong. Some sections of the track I was able to see an additional 10-15mph on the odometer (from previous 2 uk scoobys and 21/2 years of trackdays)...quite impressive

The P1 is set up perfectly...and indeed extremely flattering for an poor/average driver such as me (I know what level I can drive to and don't pretend to be anything else).

Thanks again for a wonderful day.

The Midlands Type R club for bothering to get out of bed...you'll be out there next time guys.

Stef for getting things going

Mike Rainbird for providing flame support

Robmac and his marshalls for keeping the balance between fun and stupidity

Frank (the flag man) for being prepared to freeze his nads off for our pleasure.

Tyres Northampton for pretending to not feel the cold...thanks again guys.

And all the other great people who made it a superb day.

2001 is already a cracking year....lets make even better.

Ian.

In this ego + testosterone filled thread, it's refreshing to see someone modest about their skills; attributing their speed to their car and not their "My name is Michael Schumacher" misconceptions of their abilities.

You were pretty fast out their Ian, I don't think it was all the car's doing !

It was funny to see Hippy skinning up while going through Craner I think Ian and I were both being very cautious in the first 2 sessions as the ICE was very dangerous, I remember following Ian thinking wow im catching him fast ( I was skidding straight towards him :eek

Good to see the Hippy Passion Wagon out on the track, shame the owners an Ugly bloke LOL

The egos have landed! I didn't realise it was a disgrace to get lapped twice in a session (which I did by a couple of VERY quick cars!)

As it was my first time on the track I spent a lot of the first 2 sessions religiously watching the mirrors and moving over whenever anyone approached, just getting used to the circuit.

The final afternoon sesh (when my brakes finally gave up the ghost) was amazing as I'd got the hang of the lines etc and there seemed to be less traffic catching me so I wasn't so paranoid about getting in the way. It took me till then to realise that Craner can be taken foot to the floor!

Cheers to Stef for helping to organise it and I'm looking forward to the next one - should be a bit less of a pansy next time around.

Kryten - did you get my MAJOR sideways 'moment' when you were following me with your video camera?? I'd be interested to see it if you did!

If anyone has shots of a black WRX (mostly going sideways! ) I'd be interested in hearing from you.

See you next time!

The first session was...er...downright scary.

RobMac made sure everybody was aware of the ice situation on the track...and he wasn't joking.

I felt as though I was making pretty terrible progress...the worry of the ice...the lack of understanding of the car...the different torque split making the car a little tail happy...etc.

I felt much better knowing that everyone else was having to contend with the same conditions. I was amazed that Dingys little rocket powered paper cup...it must have been damn scary trying to lay down 400+ bhp via those tiny rear wheels...a real hero...

I remember watching uncle Harj in my mirror...hehehe...yep...slippy slidy.

You guys crack me up

Salsa... was yours the red one with the stickers ?

I remember approaching...passing.. and leaving you... *hey if you can brag.. then why not me*

The day was excellent... some great stuff...except for the a$$hole in the lotus severn replica (on trade plates).... he would not move over!! grrr

Sorry John...I couldnt see you.... I had a run off thank god...even had to swerve through the tire wall chicane.. lol...

Hippy's car was awesome... seemed very neutral..and had power..

I have some nice video footage of my flame outs while braking into Redgate..

The capris were quick...

A big thanks to Tyres Northampton..excellent service...

To be honest.. its not fair comparing mine to other subies... but who cares

At the end of the day you guys/gals might have been catching me.... but I was loosing boost.. damn leak... was down to 0.8 bar... damn.. I feel like a mortal.

J.

I worked out I was getting just over 7MPG!! lol

What a Great day!!

I probably wasn't as fast as some, partially due to caution and partially due to the state of my brakes (as those who saw the smoke coming off them after every session will believe)! Needed new disks and pads afterwards

As for video, I haven't found your sideways moment yet, Ben - can you remember roughly when it was?

Stef, I'm sure you'll be pleased to know I have found the footage of Mike R spinning his Cossie. I'll try to get it into MPEG and post somewhere later today. No taking the p*ss now

Also got my very own 'oh god' moment at Redgate where I very nearly found the ditch RobM had been on about at the briefing!

Thanks to everyone for such a great day, when's the next one after Oulton Park?

I have over an hours worth of video footage which I shall be putting up on the net soon.

It shows me chasing J, then both of us catching up salsa and us overtaking. J, I got some real good shots of you doing flameouts, stay tuned.

There really is very little in the cars and it boils down to two things, brakes (how much you want to punish them) and driver skill (or sanity).

I had a fantastic day at Donno, what a brilliant circuit, Craner Curves have to be the biggest adrenaline rush! Only previous trackday action was Snetterton, both were great but Donno was better.

Couple of quick 911rs' going round and Mikes Cossie was a deffinate crowd pleaser.

Can't make Oulton, whenwhere is the next one going to be?

A couple of thoughts...

...the red RS Turbo disappeared in a BIG cloud of smoke with me coming up behind him fast on the entry into Craner - a nervous moment but we both survived - left, no right! I can't see!! left again, foglights on, phew.

In the morning I got 11mpg - but for those guys who passed me in the morning - I got 8mpg in the afternoon (because I was pressing on a little bit more) and didn't see you all anywhere near as often. Except for Stef up my ar$e in Craner (again ).

Dingy,
That is a bit hypocritical of you. You are asking me to show some respect? Bollox! If you think I am going to be happy about driving around a track at over 100mph when someone like that is spewing oil all over it without care for others, then you are mistaken. Have you seen what happens when oil is spilled on a track?

I dont quite fancy writing off 30k of my money because of someone elses mistake, no thanks. The amount of times cars were coming in with smoking bonnets (oil leaking onto hot engine components) just made me angry. If your car aint up to it, stay off the track.

Kryten,
Thanks for the offer of embarrassing me... It went like this: I went out with Stef first to see where the ice was on the track and because he was driving so smoothly (most unusual for him ), it didn't seem that bad. In view of this (and against everyone's advice ), I decided to go out and brave the track conditions. It was the first lap and so I was not going very fast anyway (cold tyres and all that), but as we got into Coppice, Paul (my passenger) shouts "There's ice on the track here!" (he had just been out with someone else in a Scooby). "Where?! - oh f%^k" - full oppossite lock spin backwards into the gravel; "Oh you mean there... ". I then decided that discression was the better part of valour and waited another session until the sun had thawed that part of the track out.....

Thoroughly enjoyed the day and only had the blue Porsche 911RS come past me when going for it, but that was because he was going to take me off if I didn't ease off down the pit straight and let him through (trying to overtake on two different bends, despite his "25 a year" track day experience).

I tried to be as courteous as possible and anyone who caught me up on a warm-up or cool-down lap was let through. Was peeved off with the amount of cars that didn't use their mirrors down the straights. Most notably the lime green 306 (every time). It might have been her first time out, but that was no excuse for not letting people through. Others can be excused (in varying degrees ), as it was a momentary lapse of concentration and a quick flash of the lights was enough (the 306 would NOT budge for anyone though).

If you think that the lack of grip was scary for you 4wd girls, just think how bad it was for Dingy and myself .

As for the a r s e h o l e who made the comment to Ollie (Red S1) about not being allowed on the track because he spun on the oil when his cam seal popped out (I'm sure you know who you are), then I think you should have engaged your brain before you opened your mouth and at least asked why he spun off. Personally I'm surprised that with comments like that, you were allowed to walk away....

Thanks to Stef (UK), Harj (22B) and Ian (P1) for taking Paul out and making his day. Apparantly Harj is the only person that can hold a normal conversation AND drive at the same time...

Thats a fair point about the oil but very little was spilt on the track.....its a test day really...not a race.....we didn't want to cause any accidents....as My friend had the worse one of the day we do know what it is like.

But you really should have some patience with people with problems, as for saying he should have been on the track is completly stupid......
I have problems of a different kind, but thats half the fun......so who else left oil on the track then.....???

30k....lot of money that......
