IPhone 3G - bloody geeks
My first couple of registration attempts failed on iTunes (on the day of release, so probably the iTunes Store was overloaded), but after plugging the iPhone back in to the Mac after a couple of hours, the registration screen came up and everything went through.
I was off sick that whole week, couldnt leave the house so was majorly bored and decided to get one, called up Carphonewarehouse at 2.30 on Thursday afternoon and it was delivered first thing Friday morning! Feel sorry for the people standing outside shops for hours!
So far pretty impressed with the phone!

This morning I managed to get a white 16gb iPhone in the Apple store at Lakeside. No queues, plenty of specialists available that actually knew how to sell me a phone and activate it. Took a max of 15 mins.
Have used a macbook for a year, ipod touch for 6 months and now just hope my iphone experience is as good for the next 18 months!

I paid for mine at CPW on Friday. Told it would be with me either Saturday or definitely Monday. Phoned up and was told 'oh sorry sir we're out of stock'.
I've been so warn down by poor customer service in consumer companies over the last few years I've lost the ability to get angry about it.

Just realised today that I've had no 3G reception on the phone. There was a symbol I presumed was 3g (as it was different to my old psone) turns out it's not!
I tried my sim in a friends phone and that came up 3g so my phone is fubbered then!
And so then fun begins... o2 tell me to go to carphonew warehouse, cpw tell me to go to apple, apple tell me to go to cpw, cpw tell me to go back to apple, apple tell me they can take it back but can't exchange it they need it for 6 days FFS!!!

The GPS has come in handy a couple of times when doing Urban Ex, and having a decent-sized screen means I don't have to carry my iPod Video and a phone around anymore; just the one fully-functioning unit suits me down to the ground.
I guess my only gripe is that Apple didn't make the iPhone backwards compatible with the iPod with regard to the bottom connector, as my in-car Pioneer iPod interface doesn't like the iPhone, and my headphone radio/remote control doesn't work either.

Apart from all this, highly recommended!

If its still fooked, drop me a pm and ill see if i can speak to the guy who sits across from me next week when im in work (hes the iphone guy for O2
)Tony
The stockist who provided the phone should replace it, its contractural to them, if you bought it from an O2 shop then you should take it back there or if you got it from an apple shop, back to them (its a retail thing to do with the contract and not the provider).

Thanks Tony.
It actually turns out worse than the phone being faulty.. I just can't get 3G anywhere I go regularly. I kept an eye on it while out for a drive and it only came on once for about 5 seconds! It seems my colleague's phone was displaying the GPRS symbol (after he checked his manual) so not only did I waste my time on the phone all afternoon but I now have the 'new iPhone 3G' that works nowhere I go
I'd have thought a big town in Kent would have coverage!

When my mobile broadband dongle thing drops to GPRS viewing pages is extremely painful.

It's not too bad, actually. So far, it has been readily available in all the urban places I visit, and even the 'maps' app isn't too bad when out in the country and using GPRS.
I'm not overly impressed with the coverage of The Cloud in London, though.

Markus - any chance your dev mate can come up with a couple of simple apps?
I know you can get this info from the web but being able to press a simple button to go straight to it would be great.
1. Premiership football scores - I often use my phone to check the latest scores when the footie is one, something that sent me straight to a page with all results for each division and who the scorer's are would be good.
2. The Gee-gee's - I don't follow horse racing much but since my mates kept seeing me checking the football, I always got "see what won the 3.30 at kempton while you're at it..." wouldn't be used much by me, but I can bribe my mates into buying drinks in return for the info

Probably a completely stupid question, but:
iPhones in general - Do I have to use iTunes in order to upload songs/videos to the thing, or can I just grab a few gig of my mp3s and drag'n'drop them to the phone?
I don't currently use iTunes, hate it in fact, and if I have to use it then that's one big reason for me not to buy one - though I was holding out for the 3G version with ActiveSync...

Yep - you're stuck with itunes... you get to the App store through iTunes, and it also sync's your contacts etc and takes a backup of all your settings etc each time you connect it.
No avoiding it AFAIK.

I guess I'm in the minority who actually likes iTunes then! To be honest, I hated it in the beginning - having been too used to WinAmp, etc - but now much prefer it to the others as it's a nicely customisable (without going OTT) app that is great for controlling large media libraries.
