It is not just a poor choice to pick on, but just about the worst possible choice to pick on for a rolling acceleration test!

I was thinking about the twin turbo 335i, and trading in my 535d, any one know the real world mpg for them?, my 535d does about 30mpg on average, if the 335i can do say 25mpg, I think we would be laughing??

135i would be fine by me if it made better use of having 4 pot brakes, was substantially lighter than the 335i, and was suitably cheaper, I could even put up with the looks. As it is, the 335i seems a bargain, certainly if I was buying one car now and wanted to be relatively sensible that would probably be it.

John, check out this months Redline mag.

A regular over on the BM BB I mentioned before had a shootout with his mapped 335D. The results are apparantly in the mag, but I've listed them here...

0-60 in 5.4
0-100 in 12.5
1/4 13.77 @ 104. Been quicker (13.5@105)
  • Vauxhall VXR8 0-60 5.4 / 0-100 13.20
  • Imprezza RB320 0-60 4.8 / 0-100 12.5
  • Audi S3 0-60 6.2 / 0-100 14.61
  • DXB335D 0-60 5.4 / 0-100 12.55
  • Stock 335d 0-60 5.8 / 0-100 13.77
Seems the initial RB grips gets negated by the D torque to 100

Stock 335i does the same though... 335i remapped is 10.x, you're taking a second off the quarter mile and adding 10mph to the mapped 335d, standard 996 turbo manual is 9.2 to 100. A 335d can't compete, does well for its economy though.

True. I think the rip off (and quite frankly criminal & profiteering) D prices negate some of that, but I don't think it will be long before they HAVE to come down...(But that's another thread)

People who choose to drive 335D's have economic reasons as one of their top prioritites over the exhaust note and manual change of the 335i... Tax brackets are also substantially cheaper (if they stay as they are are for 09 and beyond) as is insurance. Residuals play a factor at the moment too.

Therefore the 335i makes much less sense.

Good debate though!!

Saw that vid years ago, still a favourite. That's what you need in life - the ability to deliver an almighty 'bye-bye' type spanking!
