No need to let it idle if you just drive for the last 5 mins off-boost

Anyway, he pulls over and I jump out, and while he's telling me I'm being ridiculous I notice an odd smell, and suddenly remember the protocol for leaving engine running for a few minutes after hard driving. About 2 minutes had passed before I realised and immediately started the engine, and no more smells.

Everything seems fine, but what damage might I have done?

Nothing, all the misinformation is from the old days of mineral oil coking things up due to excessive heat. Modern synthetics dont as there much more stable at higher temps.

There is a little sticker on the driver's door of my classic (don't know about new ages) advising that the engine should be allowed to idle for a minute immediately after hard used before shutting off. If you're not driving off boost for a while before shutting off, then it might be a good idea if you were to heed this advice

You deserve your motor to blow up if you do stupid sh*t like that. Accidents happen, get over it. Chasing him and getting all road rage at him isnt going to make your scratch magically dissapear.
If someone hit my car and did not stop, I would chase after them as well - why should they get off scott free? If of course I caught up and they were bigger than me, I would of course back off...

Sounds like a chav attitude

A normal person would take the number plate down and report it to the police. We have car insuarance and council tax for a reason.

Yeah im sure it will be a top police priority mate.

Anyway! back to the topic of warming/cooling.
How long do you guys leave your car to warm before boosting first drive of the day (ie: morning run). It usually takes my water temp about 5-7 mins to reach optimum temp & then i leave it usually another 5-10 mins. Am i over parenoid???

About 8-10 miles of continuous driving for my oil temp to hit 85.

I drive sub-3000 RPM until then, which isn't hard as it's country lanes for the first 7 miles in any direction, not stopping/starting.
