Ah, thank you for clearing this up, drummog!
So the Motul looks like a good solution for everything. I'll go for that then.
Thanks again!

Hi Oilman,

I've got a MY00 Classic Impreza with a vf35 turbo that's running about 350bhp. It's done just over 108k miles. I use it as my daily driver with the occasional bit of 'enthusiastic' driving No track days or anything like that. I currently use Shelll Helix Ultra 5w40 and was wondering if that was a good one to stick with or could I improve things at all by changing?

I'm also looking at what oil would be good to put in the rear diff and the gearbox, and how much would I need of both of those to do a change? It's a nightmare trying to find info like that on the internet, all websites and forums seem to constantly contradict each other, so would be good to hear it straight from an expert

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi

I would say a good 5w-40 would probably be the way to go, unless you are getting high (over 125C) oil temps, then a 10w-50 is the best choice.*

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS Nanodrive, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition.

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox and diff and here are the ones we have.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-...ion-fluid.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline MT90 and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives. The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Redline 75w-90 GL5, Motul Gear 300 and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Amsoil FGR are also good choices. The gearbox takes 3.5L and diff 0.8L.

Cheers

Tim

Hi

Same as above for the engine oil.

With the dccd box, go for the Motul Gear 300 and in the diff, the Motul 90PA, Fuchs 90ls or Shell TS90 will be ideal

3.5L for the gearbox, 0.8L for the diff and 5L for the engine.

Using the code SCOOBY will take 10% off our site prices.

Hi OilMan, can you tell me why you recommend a 5w 40 oil instead of what the manual states at 5w 30? (05 STI type UK completely standard). also are the recommendations
With the dccd box, go for the Motul Gear 300, and in the diff, the Motul 90PA the same for my car?

Hi

Yes, with the DCCD box and diff, the Gear 300 and 90PA are ideal.

We recommend 5w-40(generally) for Imprezas as while the 5w-30 is fine for a standard car, driven like a normal road car, people that buy a 2L turbo 4wd car tend to drive it a bit quicker than a normal road car.

Cheers

As the temp isn't getting that high, there's no need to go to a thicker grade.

Hi Mate,

I've received my Engine Oil and Rear Diff Oil (Thanks)

I am thinking of changing my centre diff/gearbox oil.. Ive seen the recommended Motul Gear 300, but on your website this is in 1 Litre bottles... do you sell it in bigger sizes? As will cost near £70 for the Gearbox fluid?

Is Millers Oil CRX 75w-90 any good in comparison?

Thanks, Ryan

The CRX is 2nd on my list to recommend after the Motul for the simple reason that one person reckoned it didn't work in his STi box (to be honest, I'm pretty sure the box was knackered anyway). No one has told me of any issues with the Gear 300, so I tend to recommend that instead. There is a current offer code of MAYHEM for 25% off.

Cheers

i currently run millers cfs 10w40 in mine, when oil is fully warmed up and driving in traffic it can idle at the lowest at around 1.7 bar, pressure when on boost is around 6 bar and hottest ive seen the oil get after a hard mountain drive is about 115c

What viscosity would i need to change to to maybe help keep the hot idle pressure above 2 bar. would i need to go for a 10w50 or a 15w50 or the opposite and go for the likes of a 5w30? Im not up to scratch on how the difference viscosities affect temps and pressures. Any advice is appreciated as i need to buy some oil soon and do a change soon.

The pressure sounds fine to me and the temps is fine for the CFS 10w-40. If you really want to up the pressure, a 10w-50 will probably take it over 2 bar.
