Lead by example is the best approach to lane discipline on motorways - if we all do it than others will follow (a bit like sheep!!)

Driving standards in this country are appalling and getting worse.
All the hazards you mention still occur on roads with a 70mph limit. I have seen cars at 60 trying to avoid stray animals, not a pretty sight.

What is required is better driver training. Anticipation, awareness, skid control etc. These skills are far more apparent in people who enjoy driving (not just getting from A to B) and arguably the increased concentration required to drive quicker will reduce accidents due to hazards. Driving slower than possible leads to frustration and increased distraction. (And of course, if you are doing 100mph you will have past the stray animal before it comes onto the carriageway )

Speed limits are set necessarily for the lowest common denominator. Similar to 'sharp bend' signs. How often are those used for corners that can easily be taken at 70 on motorway slip roads? Obviously if you are towing a caravan or driving a lorry loaded with hay bales then you have to make your own adjustments. Drivers should be responsible for their own actions.
