David, the way I see it is that a tragedy is a tragedy, it happens everyday, on different scales, all over the world.

To me, the ongoing tragedy of the 'heat or eat' pensioners who live in this country is far more relevent and important than what is a happening after a tropical storm in a remote part of south east asia.

As Suresh suggests it should be an organisation like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations who should bear the responsibility for this, not us.

That 5 million could/should be better spent at home.

I'll rest my case....

Because I have a family to take care of. I do what I can - Which, is a lot better than nothing, and a whole lot better than actively discouraging it.

Some sad people in here if they cant handle the government handing out £5million to Burma after whats been such a big scale disaster.

Some of the remarks are pretty shallow too, quite impressed infractions havent been handed out.

There are people in cut off remote areas with no water and no food. All they can do is hope someone comes to help. I like to think the western governments can stop wasting my taxes for a few minutes and send a bit of food and water.
The UK first invaded Burma in 1820 and invaded twice leaving in 1945 after trying to make it a province of India.
To fulfil our responabilities we should have left it in a stable political conditon. The military junta grew out of conditions the UK created under 100 years of occupation and war. Under those circumstances I think we can shell out for some bottles of Evian and some mars bars.

 

Oh FFS, stop blaming the West whenever a 3rd world st1thole makes a mess of its opportunities. The political situation in Burma is the fault of ASEAN who have the leverage to do something but choose to do precisely nothing.

India wasn't left in a stable political state, but finally turned out pretty much okay to the extent that their companies are buying western companies even.

Saw the news tonight and all the aid donated from SN members and others is probably still sitting on the tarmac at Heathrow.

 

I did laugh at the news that the junta will not accept the aid workers or aid relief from a lot of countries but are happy to accept their cash hahaha

 

It's a really sad state of affairs. Hopefully it can be resolved soon with aid getting to where it is needed.

 

There'll be a push from some countries to carry out unauthorised air drops. If the military take out one of these planes then the **** really will hit the proverbial.

Basically the generals are prepared to sacrifice tens of thousands of their own people and leave them to die in a quagmire of filth and stinking bodies.

But, as some on SN say, sadly in my view, what the hell it's not our problem. dl
