If you look in your V5 log book under vehicle details there should be two dates. The first one is the date of first registration, i.e. when it was first registered in whatever country it was sold in (if known). The second one is date of first registration in the UK. If its not a brand new import car the two dates should be different. In this case first registration is sometime in 2000, and first registration in UK is (I'm guessing) sometime recently. Its the first date they go on, and if the first registered date is post 1 March 2001 for a MY00 car its been registered wrong with DVLA, and you end up paying the higher tax.
My MY00 WRX RA was first registered 1 March 2000 (in Japan), and first registered in the UK in October 2006. So I only have to pay the lower tax rate. If it was me, I would take it up with DVLA Swansea and see if they will ammend your V5 logbook.

1. Regardless of first registration date, the DVLA now go on the first UK registration date and CO2 emissions figures
2. Costs are incorrect on the V11, should be:
5 Months £220.00
12 Months £400.00
3. New budget is out so next year costs will go up meaning everyone unless your mega rich is getting jail raped by Mr Brown and his party
basically folks they found an area where joe public could get around being robbed and found a way to shaft us.
Insane.. I have spent almost £1k this month on the car once I add in the road tax

Validation Character: G
Date of First Registration: 01 06 2000
Date of First Registration in the UK: 10 08 2007
Make: Subaru
Model/Type: Impreza WRX STi (should be Type RA Variant)
Body Type: 4 Door Saloon
Taxation Class: Petrol Car
Cylinder Capacity: 1998CC
CO2 (g/km): 326 G/KM
Type of Fuel: Petrol
Vehicle Category: M1
Details on the V11 I received end of March:
Validation Character: G
Make: Subaru
Engine Capacity/CO2: 326 G/KM
Tax Class: PETROL
The impression I get there is no different case for anyone now, regardless of what band you were in and how much you have been paying, I get the feeling everyone will be put into the same group and charged the new rip off amount.

So people who luckily have had theirs imported (registered in the UK) before 2001 will be paying less on road tax than people who have had theirs imported after 2001, on the exact same model of car. I vote the entire government should be sacked or shot. Imagine the amount of money the UK would save not having to pay all their salaries and expenses.

my road tax this year was £210, next year its £415!!!
The only good thing is my tax is due in January , 2 months before it should go up to £415. So maybe I might just get it for £210 again!!

ok guys Ive just found something out that might help you out.
Look on your V5 , look for "taxation class". If it says "petrol car" your paying the higher tax, if it says "PLG" its lower (usually on imports).
if you have an import that says petrol car on the v5 , take it up with the dvla.
Its appearing as if they have accidently on purpose put alot of imports in for the higher tax band when they shouldnt be.

Out of interest those with lower road tax renewals, what CO2 is printed on your V5 or the V11 form?

So,does that mean that I won't be paying the higher rate in 2009 ?

Going by some of what has been said on this thread, it looks like we'll be ok. Ours says PLG and has no emissions data, for that matter, it doesn't have a great deal of data full stop. But if that is the case, then I am relieved to say the least, yet I am still thinking of what I can do in protest to this taxation, regardless of whether it affects me or not. As TerzoAlan says, the government is robbing us, I mean to backdate a tax so to speak, even if it's legal, surely it is ethically wrong. I guess the government don't have to be ethical though.
I'm not going to rant too much, as I've said it all before on a previous thread about this same issue, before I even thought for a second this would even affect me. I would love to know who this government actually supports, because it certainly doesn't seem to be the vast majority who go out and work, and contribute to the pot already, in soooo many other ways.

Coptied from MLR.
If your car was FIRST registered in the UK before March 2001 then you should be paying road tax based on the engine size which will mean £185 pa and PLG on your log book.
If your new car was First registered in the UK after 1st March 2001 and before 23 March 2006 then your car should be banded in VED bands A-F (most probably F) and should pay approx £205 pa. Logbook should show Taxation class as Petrol Car
If your car was an import registered before March 2006 then you probably got away with a PLG taxation and only pay £185....you are lucky.
If your car was first registered in the UK after 24th March 2006 and it's under 10 years of age when it was first registered in the UK then it should require and ESVA which will mean that you will pay VED based on emissions at the SVA test, probably Band G, which will cost £400pa and again the taxation class will be Petrol Car

Hi,
Can anyone confirm how much road tax would be on a 1995 classic import, imported in 2004?
Looking to buy but wont get an import if the tax is gonna be 400 a year.
Cheers,
Andy

Looks like ive just scraped the esva test, mine was imported on the 10th march 2006 the v5 says plg tax class and there's no emmisions data to be shown.
I paid the standard going rate when i renewed end of march.
Bluerigster seems to be pretty much spot on with the information, it's the closet ive seen to a full explanation.
I do however feel sorry for those that have to pay the higher tax bracket, not fair at all seeing the government backdated it so we had no idea it was coming.

2001 import sti bug
Date of reg:- 10/2001
first reg in uk :-03/2004
taxation class:- PLG
validation character:- 'A' (would of thought it would be higher?).
NO EMMISION DATA ON V5
so does this mean i'll be paying the lower rate???????

Exactly, who knows for sure until their own bill comes in? This new taxation seems to have created alot of confusion, doubt the government will care about that though. So long as the money keeps coming in, all is well for them, even if it's by less than fair means.
Just an add on, our validation character is 'H', so what that means is anyone's guess.
