Accordingly, I can't respond in a positive manner and try and negotiate an amicable solution at this stage.

I'm sorry if my exhaust is disturbing one/some of you. It is, however, perfectly road legal and the car is driven very gently when started in the morning so as to try and avoid disturbing the surrounding houses. Furthermore a 7am departure is common for people who commute to work by car and hardly anti-social.

If the people affected would kindly contact me in person we can discuss a way of minimising the inconvenience to them over a cuppa. I'm sure you'll agree this is much more in keeping with the spirit of good neighbor relations than anonymous threats. I'm far from an unreasonable person and don't want to cause anyone any undue inconvenience.

Excellent post (as usual) And as others have said, if they then spurn your friendly and reasonable approach, tell them to go and stick their heads up a dead bear's bum

There is a good chance that this exhaust is not road legal (MoT checks only security of exhaust and for holes - not the noise level).
Personally I would do something about it. Some police forces and some councils are very keen on excessive noise nowadays and may well respond to a complaint. Remember that you could be dealing with a neighbour who has time on his/her hands and will happily spend a day ringing council, police etc etc until they get a result.

You need to know where you stand re the exhaust - and the simple answer is, that it does not comply with road regs.

Therefore be careful with how you deal with your neighbour. Bung is the cheapest/simplest option but may not be enough.

With all the vans, kids, cars, petrol lawn mowers, strimmers etc, one loud exhaust is a mere drop in the ocean, if you live on an estate you live with noise end of. Although the R1 that used to wake me up at 5.30 every morning by Rossi-ing up the road has gladly fukced off

I have a bung for my 3" decat Apexi and it makes a big difference FWIW

Last scoob i had i fitted a Blitz system which was loud.
The car was kept in the garage which has a metal roof so when i started it up at 6am every morning i did feel guilty and tried to keep the revs down when setting off.
I sold the exhaust and a few days later 1 of the neighbours (40+ woman) mentioned she missed the noise as it woke her up on time whereas her alarm didn't

Surely your car's not road legal with that exhaust system? I would also think it must be close to the max noise limit with that spec?

Bet it sounds good tho! Agree with another posters comment, a loud scooby exhaust is always a pleasure......

Kill the neighbours. Problem sorted.

Failing that, try what NS04 suggested.

I never really appreciated how loud my exhaust was until i started it up at 5 to get to work. I got into the car, realised i forgot something so popped back into my house and while i was in there i could hear it burbling throughout my house. TBH I smiled and thought how my neighbours must be quite decent people.

Mixed ages but generally 50+. 1 Being the garage owner who works on my car and an other who owns 2 morgans which make some noise too.

Suppose they may all be hard of hearing or big Scoob fans.

Sheeesh.. Why don't you just change your bloody exhaust?

May I suggest an RCM 'Team Ice' system...

I don't know if many people just have bloody miserable neighbours, or we have really good ones - I've never had any negative comments about my exhaust.

I hope whichever one of your neighbours it was eventually remembers were they left their spine though.

Tough one. I live right in the sticks and had to change my Magnex backbox as I used to cringe everytime I started it up in the morning. If I lived in a built up area i think I would have been lynched (linched?)

Have you spoken to any of the neighbours that you know\get on with to see if it bothers them? Doubt the council will do bugger all, I would just worry that if they didnt act the "phantom note writer" could get really pissed off and key your car or worse. Happens!

People are at their most 'orrible when their sleep is affected!

Agreed, I've never had any complaints, leave the house at 6.30 AM and my exhaust is quite loud

Would it be at-all feasible to push the car from the garage onto the driveway, or is it up-hill..??? then shut the garage, jump in the car, start it up and off you go...... also, if you reverse the car into the garage the sound on start up will be much louder than if you drive in forwards then reverse out......

Forget the bung idea as it will restrict your exhaust flow, so what's the point of having a free flowing system in the first place??

Also forget pushing your car out of the garage or killing you neighbours for that matter

Simply buy and fit an Apexi ECV [Exhaust Control Valve].

The valve is operated by a pull switch inside the cabin, the valve itself is fitted between two joins in the main exhaust system and contains a circular disk that is either partly closed or fully open [when it is side on to the flow of exhaust gas], it also comes in various sizes to suit most applications.

N.B. Never run the car on boost with the value closed though, it should only be driven with whilst on the on position using minimal throttle.

Had a search on a couple of local councils websites to see what their policy is on this, often worry about the same thing myself, this reveals that (copied from Reigate and Banstead Councls website): -

It is usually not possible to investigate a complaint without the evidence of the person being affected by the noise (the complainant).

Further, it is not unlikely that that evidence will need to be presented to a court at some later date, and that the person who provided the evidence to the council will need to appear, in person, in court to act as a witness.

It is almost never possible therefore for the council to investigate a noise complaint made by a person who wishes to remain anonymous.

So in short its unlikely the council will do anything without the co-operation of the resident making the complaint, although a bung may be a good idea. Got one in my P1 and its definately quieter - my neighbours haven't complained yet lol!

As previously said, 7 AM, the lazy F*****S the day is almost over for some people by then.!!

The other thing, I notice lots of posts about Plod stopping Scoobs because of NOISY Exhausts.

As we all kmow, AT THE MOMENT, it's not on the Rsadar Screen.

However, after the £400 Road Tax to "Save The Polar Bears/Ice Caps

(Did you read in the Sunday Papers the Ice Cap has actually got bigger, but MOST Of the papers didn't report it??)
& your never seen again!!

Spooky!

Good Luck.

I gather you have road tax and you are also upto date with your council tax so in my opinion F**k them if they haven't got the ***** to come and talk to you face to face to discuss it then who cares what they think. Just my opinion might sound a bit childish but hey who cares.

I live in a very quiet rural location in what is best described as a Hamlet.
My neighbours have to put up with whatever I bring home, as no two nights are the same! As a tuner and test driver, I run anything and everything from a 2CV Citroen to a Maserati to a classic Mustang, including a hell of a lot of Subarus undergoing initial run in and cold start and run checks after new engines or mapping. We get the odd one where the exhaust noise drives me mad, never mind the poor sods who have to listen to it!
It's like Russian Roulette for them, never knowing if I have a noisy son of a bitch in the garage or a pussycat. Of course, it's no good them complaining!

Not everybody goes to work at the same time and it is waking people up when they don't want to wake up. Alot of people are experiencing this. If these people do complain to the council,is there anything they can legally do to me ?

My car has GT Spec gen II headers and up-pipe with full Hayward&Scott system. I wouldn't say it was illegally loud !
Follow these easy steps:

1). Start up car
2). Let it warm up
3). Give it a bit of revs
4). Repeat every morning

You'll eventually get to find out who it is, and politely inform them that its MOT legal, and politely tell them to pop off!

You know,it makes me feel like making more noise on purpose now. I've always tried to be as quiet as possible but I won't bother anymore !

It's not exactly a quiet area that I live in either, only earlier this evening we had to put up with some tw*t on a motorbike with no lights/helmet racing around

I go to work at 4:30am and used to cringe when starting up the Scoob in the garage, it sounded sooo loud. I used to creep away from the house, hoping it wasn't disturbing people. Most of the time these days I go in my beater (Punto) so it's no longer an issue.

I think that complaining about it if you were in the same situation, your neighbours might have a point, but at 7am? I don't think anyone can really object, it's not exactly the crack of dawn is it?

We have a young lad over the road with a 1989 Honda Civic with some ridiculous air filter/backbox combination on it. He sits in the car revving the engine for minutes at a time, then roars off down the road with his subwoofer pounding. I feel like complaining about him to his parents but never have... if it was a Subaru I probably wouldn't mind!
