As my Japanese isn't so hot - the radiator shroud; the two identical foam strips go down the side of your radiator, the really thin one gets cut? and goes along the slam panel? What happens to the other bit?

those who bought thermostat, have you tried it yet? how is it working? I'm asking because I tried to test it cause heard something from someone and simply put it in boiling water. Instead of popping right open it started moving only after 10/15 seces and then slowly continued to open for the following minute or so. Is this how they're supposed to operate? I thought they're supposed to open earlier than stock, however it takes ages...

I'm no expert but putting it straight into boiling water isn't reproducing what happens in the cooling system. The stat sits in ambient temp water & then is heated steadily as the engine warms up & starts to open as the temp is reached that it is set for.

When you put a cold stat in boling water the whole body of the stat has to warm up before anything much can happen. A true test would be to put the stat in cold water & start heating it & check the temp of the water with a thermometer when it starts to open.

OK everyone I was wondering how people have put those two identical foam strips on the radiator? Have people actually taken the radiator out to do it?

And secondly for the intercooler splitter, how have people removed the water spray nozzles and clips holding in the tubing supplying them? I'm a little too reluctant to just yank them.

Any help appreciated! Thanks.

I am leaving mine till the coolant needs changing @ my next service. Then it's on with some new Samco rad hoses & while it's all undone the foam strips will go in. It looks pretty much impossible to get them down the sides with everything still in place.

I don't know about the nozzles as I only have a WRX. I would think they are a push fit or a twist fit. Can you see the back of them to see if they have a lip that holds them in place?

Cheers for the reply Mark. Yeah I have consigned defeat on trying to get the strips in without removal. As I'm not far off service I think it'll be wise to wait for then (is it worth replacing the radiator at all?). As for the nozzles I couldn't see as if they would push out. I did find the following which may be useful to anyone in the same position How-To: Zero/Sport Intake Mod [Archive] - Type-RA.co.uk - Forum for Subaru Impreza WRX Type RA, WRX STi, Spec-C, S202, Type RA-R

I think I'll try once more to push them out or I'll cut the nozzle tubing. When it's light again I'll definitely try to see if there's a lip. You're probably right though, should be a push or twist fit of some sort. I'll post some pictures when I have it done.

Thanks,
Carlo

Carlo looking at the pictures in that link the nozzles look like they are a tapered push fit. With possibly a slight twist to line up the notches of the hole.

The text says to support them when re-fitting the plastic tube to stop them from being pushed out of their holes. So they can't be all that tight a fit.

Your radiator should be fine unless you have any leakage problem or a lot of fin damage.

Thanks for all your help and assistance Mark in organising the group buy and with advice in fitting. Just thought I'd share a few pictures now that things are on for others to either go by or just see what they look like.

Starting Point

Zero/Sports Cool Radiator

Installation - Really is as simple as unscrewing the 4 highly visible screws here.

until you're left with...

then... {don't forget to stick down some small strips of foam either side of the bolt holes to stop the radiator shroud grating metal on metal.

Complete

The only thing I was not able to do as you might have read in the post above is stick the 2 thick foam strips vertically on either side of the radiator making a tight fit with the grille in front of it - basically forcing all the air through the radiator with none escaping out the side.

Does it work? Well I have a PSI3 data unit installed which handily reads the ECU for the coolant temperature, duly switching the fans on it it reaches 95*C. On a motorway run I'd be running around 86-89*C normally with town driving creeping pushing up to 97*C to bring the fans on (yes my JDM is hot). I now seem to get around 84*C and have even managed to push it down to 82*C (12*C outside temperature)! From this rather unscientific approach it would be fair to say it seems to lower the coolant temperature (though I will add, and it seems obvious, that it has extremely little bearing on town temperatures).

With a little help from Flat Eric and the cold light of day the Zero Sports Cool Action 2 was installed in no time too.

3 channels as opposed to the stock 2.

Removal - once again removal involves unscrewing 7 screws (don't forget the 2 hidden behind the sound deadening) and one plastic one which I had to cut out as the cross head wore out

I/C Spray Hoses - these do just pull off - be careful though as I did rip one

I/C Spray Nozzles - these have clips on them to hold them secure, nothing a pair of pliers squeezing them doesn't solve. Note they fit nice and snug inside the stock mounting and although fitted them aren't quite as snug in the Zero/Sports one.

Out with the old...

and in with the new. Note that the old one has some crusty old, flattened foam on it, so I mimicked this on the new one with the supplied piece.

I/C Spray Nozzle Fitment (underside)

Now ready to fit. I put the stock rubber skirt back on the Zero/Sports improvement to get a good seal and force as much air through the intercooler as possible. The skirt removes in much the same way as the nozzles do and conveniently Zero/Sports have drilled holes in all the right places

Temporary repair to the I/C spray nozzle until I can get a new one

and taping the tubes out of the way until I can find a better method

Complete

Interestingly there's room for 3 nozzles in the new splitter!

One possible problem is that the spray now hits the first vane in the splitter. I'm hoping that when the car is moving, the air will push the spraying water over the whole intercooler before it manages to hit the vane. I've not had a chance to test this yet, but from reading others' comments it seems that the intercooler cools the charge temperatures down much quicker than the stock one. So sitting in traffic should have reduced laggy effects afterwards. I'll be hoping to feel the effects over the coming days.

Zero/Sports Install Complete

Thanks for reading!
