Well I must have slept through it down in Wiltshire. My house is near a restored steam railway line so the house is pile driven. I wonder whether that meant I didn't feel it, as so far away.

Seriously felt that in Leeds! Thought the house was going to collapse!

Still went back to sleep straight after it finished tho, and thought maybe it was just a dream when I woke up, but then checked the news!

Woke me up here in Lancashire as I'd only just gone to bed and was just drifting into a nice sleep.

I sat bolt upright and shouted "What the f**k was that" which I think scared my Mrs more than any earthquake.

I was a bit confused as at first it sounded like a truck had hit the house, then the chimney (which goes through our room) was rumbling and I decided an owl had flown down it (even though it has a cowel on) and then the wardrobe door and the Mrs hair straighteners were shaking for about 10 seconds.

Finally realised it was an earthquake and went and checked the little lad and the house - all seems OK so far.

Last earthquake I was in, in England, was about 5 or 6 years back, sat in a fish and chip restaurant in Littleborough eating a nice fish dinner with Mellow Yellow from Scoobynet - seems a long time ago now.

Exactly what Dave said and woke me up.

Bloody strange experience I tell ya. Felt like a wave running through the house and even when it had stopped shaking, I could still hear the rumble.

It was very strange and the wave idea is a good analogy - it also makes you realise how fragile we are in our little houses when it comes to nature - it was 100's of miles from us but had that effect.

It was centred on Market Raisen in Lincs they say and was 5.3 on the Richter scale.

It woke me up, I was knackered having come back from Atlanta that morning, didnt manage to sleep on the plane and had drank too much so felt absolutely ****, didnt know which way was up, so the sjaking wakes me and until the missus puts the light on thought I was still on the plane and we were having some turbulence, on the plane I had put one of those fetching eye masks on and was trying to trying to pull it off and wondering why I couldnt see and why I was lying down.

As good a way as any to experience an earthquake then.

Felt it in Worcestershire, although the one we had in Brum felt alot stronger due to the epicentre being much closer.

I slept through a bigger one in San Francisco

5.3 is a mere bottom burp of an earthquake. I used to live in Japan and a magnitude 4-6 are a common occurance.

There are two types of earthquake, the shaking kind (which we had last night) and and up and down movement which is vastly more destructive.

I barely noticed it in Macc but maybe thats because it was probably only a magnitude 1 here. I was in Japan when the Great Hanshin earthquake happended, a magnitude 7.3.

YouTube - THE GREAT HANSHIN-AWAJI EARTHQUAKE (01)
YouTube - THE GREAT HANSHIN-AWAJI EARTHQUAKE (02)
YouTube - THE GREAT HANSHIN-AWAJI EARTHQUAKE (03)
YouTube - THE GREAT HANSHIN-AWAJI EARTHQUAKE (04)

There are a lot more.

And all those people who where on the news pontificating about pictures falling off the wall, etc.... If it had been a serious quake then your house would have fallen down, gas/water mains would have fractured, power and telephone would have gone off. and if that had of happened people would have died!
