Spectrum vs Commodore 64?..
I've got a strange feeling it was initially a book, but it's first appearance as a computer game was cross platform - amongst the popular, and even less so popular, boxes of the day. Seemed to use the same code ported to each platform rather than use the power and capabilities of each to best effect, but still quite impressive for its time.
I can picture the opening room now, a room with a closed chest on the floor and you're in there with Gandalf - who suddenly leaves, and you follow him... IIRC!
Oh - edited to say, check here for more The Hobbit (video game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Yep, came out on the Spectrum48k first I believe. Small black and white ad from an unknown developer called Melbourne House. The book was initially bundled with it. I still remember the day it dropped through my letterbox.

Nice one
